Hello !
This movie was really nice, a road trip movie mixed with a biopic, and in fact a good occasion to talk about that period of time during which you couldn't be who you were. It made me really sad and mad that Dr Shirley was discriminated against so much because he was black, and because he was gay. The movie managed to show well the fact that he was really brave to make this tour and face all of these awful people, but also all the contradictions everyone had here.
Tony's character represents these contradictions well : he's not fundamentally like these racists, he has an open mind about things and people, but at the same time he repeats the same common bullshit without questioning them. Dr Shirley also has contradictions, the fact that he chose to embrace so much one culture that he totally denies the other one. I'm so sad that he felt like he was never enough, and I made myself cry at the end, after the ending credit saying when these two disappeared : at least, they had the chance to see the world evolving and maybe Dr Shirley had the time to be openly truly himself.
