We knew this episode would be the beginning of that first battle, and that it wouldn't be following the rules. The principal of the other school told his students to go after Yuji so it was clear we would see them following his orders here. But it was a surprise to have Todo going on his own at first, the others tried to intervene but ended up letting him do it on his own.

Todo declaring that Yuji could be not only his friend but in fact his best friend based on their tastes on women, it was already fun. But to have him daydreaming about their bromance, it was beyond that ! I don't think that Todo could end up trying to kill Yuji. He admires Yuji when he fights, he wants to push his limits so he's gonna fight the best he can and Todo is gonna just feel prouder to win against him.
