Hentai Game Review: Shrift 2

My recent gaming time has been spent on slightly naughtier fair this week rather than the couple of hours I normally give myself on Dark Souls-esque games to unwind.  I thought I might as well write a review of it.

(Which can be read on my regular blog here.)

I liked the first game (despite finding some aspects awkward, especially how game saves are handled), and thought I'd check out the sequel.

Yes, I know about the art style.  That isn't going to work for some people, but the animations tend to make up for it.  The dev also tends to produce games with proper game mechanics (even if the previous game could very hard in places).

What I really liked was how level drain was handled in this.  One of the weaknesses of succubus/monster girl h-games is you have to let yourself get drained to access the sexy content, which often results in Game Overs and lost levels which are a chore to bounce back from.  In this it's part of the character progression, with it giving points to unlock skills as well as powering up your demonic companion.  I don't think the game makes full use of the mechanic (the game is easy enough you can ignore the skill tree), but there's definitely some potential here for future game ideas.

Hentai Game Review: Shrift 2

Yup. It's pretty good, if the monster girls (and outright monsters) are a little too variable for me to like them all. Smug fox girl brickwalled me in first Shrift (I rushed to her too quickly and was massively underleveled), so I never got to play around with genocide/pacifist runs (although I wouldn't mind genociding that fox girl!) I'm mixed on that kind of meta-weirdness. I don't think it works for H-games. I want to be able to save and quickly go back to certain points in the game to redo fights etc, but you can't really do it with out going into the filesystem and fiddling around with manual backups. The sequel seems better on that, but even with the hotel option, you don't get a proper refight option. Which is a shame - one of the strengths of Shrift is it really does the "slowly being overwhelmed by pleasure" fights really well.

Wait, there's a sequel? Shrift is one of my all-time faves (even if it's a game I refuse to 100% out of principle; I'm not a monster lol).

This one is mostly okay with machine translation. I found I was able to pick up most of the mechanics fairly easily and get a rough idea of the story. The only area that really stumped me was how to unlock the extra scenes. That's tied to various 'proclivities' stats, but the status screen for that is a big image, so it can't be hooked for machine translation. The dev is a gem in comparison to a lot of the shovelware out there. The Siren fight is very creative. His art is maybe a weak point, but even there he's damn good at animating it. But that is considerably better than my own 'no art at all'. :D If I get good enough with Godot, my plan is to build the skeleton of the game with all the code logic filled in, then hope I can find people good enough to fill in the art and other assets. Similar to what Threshold has done with MGD.

I'm still waiting for the fan translation to dive into Shrift 2 x3 From what I've seen, it'll be great though.. and the amount of 4th wall breaks will be soooo cum worthy aaa 🤤 the ideas of this Dev are so creative and something you'll never observe anywhere else. So if you get ideas from Shrift and adapt them for your own H-Space Games, it'd probably blow up fast in the western H-Game scene xD
