[STYLE TRIAL] Summers of Our Past pgs. 1-4

The first four pages of my new comic. I want to produce more pages faster, because there's a lot of story I want to tell. Because of this, I'm trying out a more pared-down style that is easier to produce regular work with. I hope you guys don't mind that I want to explore this side of myself as a creator.

I think things will definitely change as pieces fall into place. Maybe certain aspects of the art will tighten or slacken as they need to. I feel like maybe I'm trying too hard with certain backgrounds, haha. That's why I consider this first chapter to be something of a trial run.

Another thing I need to be on the lookout for are good neutral fonts for things like chapter titles. I'll definitely be doing some minor edits on this chapter once the overall style of the comic solidifies.

I know it's super lazy of me, but the first page is a homage to the Evangelion manga's opening. I feel like it's an efficient, if expository way to springboard Levi's character, and that manga as a whole influenced my art deeply when I was small. πŸ˜…

Is it bad I really see myself in Levi? Like we have the same thoughts on our lives?

It's great that you can identify with Levi right off the bat here, haha. I'm glad you aged out of toxic environments. I'm also really pleased to hear that you find good value in where I've found myself for these initial pages - thank you so much for the encouragement!

Thank you!! Yeah, as much as I really want to get into the more intense present-day stuff, I feel like maybe building a solid foundation with the past might be for the best. I'm glad that, outside of color, not a lot had to be visibly sacrificed. With the adjustments I made to my workflow, I was actually able to produce these four pages in less than a week. Not that I'm trying to keep that momentum necessarily, since maybe I was a little manic at the time. But it's promising all the same.

A) I had to learn how honest to be with the high school counselor, then I had to age out of my awful home environment and triumph out in the world away from all that. I AM the vibe here, and it's interesting to see it captured here. B) What you've drawn here feels very complete/polished/done. I know you gave us very detailed full-color pages before, and I love that, but in terms of "what can I take away for the sake of speed and still make great stuff" you seem to have arrived at a very strong VALUE for us. The pages look great. I hope the speed savings are helping you. This seems typical for literally all of comics for all time (level of detail vs full color cover, for instance).

Decided to go with a prequel, I see! I think this is a great opportunity to explore these characters and what made them click together. Also I can hardly tell this is a 'pared down' style--not to say the style in the comic wasn't as detailed, but your style is recognizable and still great! And if this allows you to tell more stories at a better workflow, ultimately that's what matters. I can't wait to see how this unfolds!
