Fran, could you use a capacitor instead of the dropping resistor for that lower-voltage pilot? No wasted power or heat dissaption to deal with. Assuming that was a 24-volt 2-watt bulb (typical for that style), that would be around 85 mA. To get roughly 100 volts drop (actualy 96) at that current would be a 1.2k resistor (dissapating 8.3 watts, BTW). A capacitor with equivalent reactance at 60 Hz would be a nice convenient 2.2 uF - kind of physically large, but not beyond reason. I just gave it a shot with a 12V 40 mA bulb and a 1 uF cap on my bench, and it worked like a charm... I know you've already decided on the correct pilot for this project (good choice, I think), but maybe for future projects. You could even drive an LED directly off the line this way. Also, what about those smooth-lensed "monoblock"-style pilots? Do you think they were also neon, or possibly lower-voltage incandescent?
