The SS United States Leaves Philadelphia

My final footage of the SS Unites States on the Delaware river on a very cold, windy, and dreary afternoon. One tug boat nudges it gently downstream, and three steer its bow... slowly... drifting away from Philly forever. A sad day.

The YouTube channel 'What's Going on With Shipping?' just did an episode about this ship. It's very good. https://youtu.be/79YMujORxkU?si=3ys5YLhZVKxibdGr Just find that channel, if you don't want to use the link.

Is Eloon going to sell it and pocket the money?

Rocco Rizzo

I will miss that ship. Went to see it twice.

Donna Rail

Your post immediately had me humming and singing Roger Wittaker's River Lady ! Changing the topic here if I can, You do live streams, do you have schedule of when, would love to join.

I remember two crossings on her as a young kid. The huge funnels towering overhead the blast of the slipstream when she was at speed.Sad to see her like this. You can still see the sleek design as she moves out, never to return.

Mom and I took the SS United States from New York to Bremerhaven back in late 1955, I being a bit too young to remember the voyage. We were joining my father who was stationed in Germany. Somehow the final fate of this ship seems to be mirroring the fate of our nation as well. "Through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes I can barely define the shape of this moment in time And far from flying high in clear blue skies I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide"

James Korman

It's going to be stripped the rest of the way and sunk as an artificial reef.

Michael F Barushok

yes, not being skuttled?

Nerdful Things

wonder what i rode on coming back to the states in a basket in the 50s

Nerdful Things

Very sad, but well done for capturing it.

Dr Andy Hill

Thanks for braving the weather to capture that Fran.

Bob Pockney

Thank you Fran. Let's hope that she will become a reef in which new life can come forth. For a moment I though that the smoke coming from the stack behind her was coming from her stack.

Bill Lee

According to an article in USA Today "It's a bittersweet finale for the ship. It can't be saved, but it won't be scrapped."

AlexBrandon

What is its fate?

EEVblog

Oh wow it finally happened. How do you feel about it Fran? I mean, do you think something good will happen where it stood? I hope its future 'life' is beneficial.

I find this very sad that the United States is moving, from Philadelphia, no less, to be eventually sunk. How symbolic.

Dan Beach

Bon voyage!

My family came back to the USA after living in Austria on the United States. I have pictures of the during the crossing to New York. I was there, too, but not yet born.
