BINA-VIEW Controller Project Pt.1

I'm revisiting an old friend - the one of a kind IEE BINA-VIEW display - with a new project to create a dedicated control unit for the display that is period correct for the early 1960's and ultra cool. Here is where it starts. Enjoy!

Amazing project!!! Looking forward to it!!

Oliver Prosperi

Yes, I think you're right. The IEE label got me. Either style was "advanced" for their time, though the BINA-VIEW was considerably more complex. Looking forward to following your build.

Dan Beach

If I'd have built it in 1961 I'd have had to use Lego. Didn't get a soldering iron until I was about 8.

Were they BINA-VIEW displays? I'd be surprised - the more affordable projection displays were very common in the 60's - NASA used them for all the boards and consoles, etc.

Fran Blanche

Wow-can’t wait to see more! The vintage IEE logo would look good in the graphics of your control box! This is gonna be cool, Fran!

Markintosh

Love it! In the early '60s, I built a 10-second countdown display using a pair of these. We used it on camera at the head of programs we were taping at WGBH-TV, Boston, along with a simultaneous "beep" tone, up until the 3-second mark. (Pre SMPTE-code days!)

Dan Beach

Oo yes! This is gonna be seriously cool, classic Fran Lab stuff! 😊 Since the BINA-VIEW text seems to be in some form of Gill Sans, will that do for the graphics on the finished device? One of the narrower interpretations, perhaps?

Zygmunt Dean

gonna be neat. the original bina-view video was inspiration to try designing an n-bit function mechanism in openscad.

Art Yerkes

my first project view, Wow!!!!! Love the Quad Pad and your dialogue is wonderful. Dang. D

Dennis Murphey

I've been waiting for a project featuring that case since you showed it in a vault video. Exciting times indeed!
