What Is Severance Really About? What Is Severance Really About?

Comments

A show on Apple TV+ - same service that ran "For All Mankind".

Watching it! Awesome!!

Lost, was (to those familiar with the process of writing) a one handed writers exercise. Severance is an exploration of identity. That much is clear. The rest is like art (which is also a theme in the show), it seems more about feeling. I think, shows like "The Prisoner" were more about allegory, and I include the unpopular remake which repositioned it as a place of mental healing. I'm guessing viewers who are more literal minded will probably hate the destination. With Severance, perhaps the episodes should be just enjoyed, one episode at a time. I don't know if the world is set in some virtual creation, a place of healing, an alternative timeline with a flipped view of modern corporate culture, or even a weird space-time bubble (looking at you "Dark"). I feel any explicit revelation along these lines wouldn't serve the shows themes at all. Season 1 felt like primary school, you have a simple work structure, ball game and a quarterly goal. Season 2 feels like your teenage years, rebellion, acting out, consequences. To what end? I don't know. Cloning, virtual copies, immortality. There are not so subtle hints at all these things (3D printers, lookalikes) which could be red-herrings. I do know the show looks fantastic, makes me chuckle with recognition of my time working for large organisations. And that seems to be enough for me.

Fran, I strongly disagree that the ending of the Sopranos was ordinary. It was in fact, pure genius. Before I say why, I urge you to go back and watch the final episode. Follow the last minutes cut by cut and ask yourself why the director/editors did those last few minutes the way they did. Hope you enjoy it.

I have been loving this season so far! Severance is amazing, and has me hooked!

I watched “Lost” back when it came out, and I have a lot of the same feelings for Severance as I did early along in Lost. The strange twists and turns, and excited to find out where it was all headed… Then, the final episode of Lost… (spoiler alert!!!) absolutely sucked. The realization that the writers had no idea where it was going during the early episodes. I charitably acknowledge that they may have had faith that they’d come up with something to tie up all the loose ends eventually, and they just couldn’t. If Severance ends up the same, unsatisfying way, I may swear off getting interested in series until the franchise ends and I’m assured there’s a cogent conclusion. 🤞😣🤞
