Video Fail: What's Going On With E-Tubers?

Times Change - so does YouTube. Is there still a place here for 'Legacy' channels? I am not so sure.... but it is all up to the algorithm. With all the new up and coming channels out there, can we older E-Tubers be dealt back in?

Comments

I basically just retyped the comment here (not word-for-word, but the essence was the same). My YT handle is @philipstephens5960.

Philip Stephens

What was the comment and what is your handle o YT?

Fran Blanche

I just wrote a comment under this video on YouTube, and yet a few minutes later it was just...gone. So I think I've just experienced what a lot of other viewers have regarding comments been deleted by YouTube for no apparent reason. Anyway, I came here to say that I for one don't rely upon the recommendations feed to find the latest videos from my subscribed channels. But I guess there just aren't enough of people like me to make a difference. Also, I admit I didn't watch the latest teardown of a mechanical digital clock, because Fran had already posted quite a few of those in recent weeks, and I just didn't feel like sitting through another one. But again, my personal reason for not watching it is unlikely to be typical.

Fran, just for the sake of it, try making an "executive summary" of the video to see if the lenght was the problem

I've only recently discovered Usagi Electric. Its cool, but its no substitute for Fran content. David's good at what he does and a nice enough chap but Fran's content is a unique blend of many things. I suppose I'm one of the people that actually enjoys this spread of things, instead of the "no [insert dislike here], more [insert preference here]!" bods.

I have had an LED circular lamp in my Luxo magnifier for a couple of years. It doesn't fit the clips and keeps falling out.

yeah but most of them are utter crap. youtube just pushes thousands of videos at me that aren't interesting. They're actually really bad at their job. Ditch them. I would be very happy to follow you elsewhere. And the variety of Fran's submissions is one of the best things. Maybe you need different channels for different areas if that's what engages people.

Please don't sink to putting a gurning face or nudes on thumbnails even if that's what youtube wants

adrian

One point I'd make is the length. Does the Tube preferentially select shorter videos ? I delayed watching the Telechron one until I had a clear hour to watch - and it was worth it !

I watched this video while sitting next to one of those fluorescent magnifier lights and with a UV test card in a drawer in front of me. Never before has it been less effort for me to confirm something I heard on YouTube. I was skeptical, but sure enough, that tube really does put out some UV. I foolishly replaced that tube not long ago without even stopping to think about whether LED replacements were available. I should replace it anyway.

12:30 - You are right, a lot of it is that there is definitely more channels out there, which means less views for each of us to go around for our niche. The other reason (perhaps the most important) is also that, like my channel, FranLab is a generalist channel with a wide variety of eclectic content. This means that fewer subscribers are guaranted to be satisfied with any given video, and then the The Algorithm does its thing and buries you as punishment for that. The "sucessful channels" all have something in common, they stick an even narrower niche and don't make content outside of that niche. You mentioned Adrian's Digital Basement, he gets a high subscriber to view ratio because he sticks to that niche. Same with Big Clive, Great Scott etc. When you subscribe you get the exact same type and style and length video that you expect, every time. I've got Mailbag, teardowns, tutorials, vintage, repairs, reviews, rants, dumpster, interviews, and the list goes on. I'm eventually doomed, and the declining stats of the last few years show it.

Ellie Arroway : I didn't realize that I was out. S.R. Hadden : Well, maybe not out... but certainly being handed your hat.
