What's Up With The Gig Economy? What's Up With The Gig Economy?

Once upon a time, there were sizable segments of the broad economy that considered employees as assets after they became extremely productive. No longer. Employees are almost always viewed as liabilities now. So, it's not surprising that more and more young adults view children as liabilities, too.

Content creators on YT are working on pretty much the same model as public broadcasting. You can watch/listen for free, but the bills have to get paid somehow, so public broadcasters and YT channels turn to their audience for support. A lot of people believe that since they don't have to pay to consume the content, it must not cost anything to make that content. So public broadcasting seeks underwriters, and YT channels seek sponsors. Then they face the inevitable backlash from a segment of their audience (usually the ones who weren't pledging/supporting) who accuse them of "selling out." I wish it wasn't so, but you have to have a thick skin to pursue creating and performing.

I've done my time doing repairs through an online platform. They became so enshittified I got off there, moved on to fixing gear in my lab and running my teeny tiny Youtube channel. Ain't secure or risk-free, but better than the previous one.

The delivery driver gig has definitely become low paying. It happens pretty rapidly, and suddenly.
