The United States Is Still In Philly

At least for now... But for how long?

The United States Is Still In Philly The United States Is Still In Philly

Thanks for the update, Fran! I have a couple of minor corrections about the NJ and one major one about the NJ/US comparison. Minor: the decking replacement has been going on at the NJ for multiple years now. They continued it during the dry docking, but it was a minor part of the work. The main purpose of the dry docking was cleaning, fixing minor leaks, and painting the under hull, which went very well. My major point (which I know Fran knows, but I'm making the point for those who haven't seen the ships and might not know): while they're both preserved ships, there's a major difference between the two. The New Jersey became a museum round about 2001. It immediately had a draw, in that it has interiors with stuff, furniture, control panels, books, tools, stuff people used. They've obviously fixed it up a lot in the 23 years, but it started with enough of an interior that people wanted to see it, so it didn't have any crushing flaw and it could start generating revenue immediately. The United States' interior is gutted. It's not a reasonable thing to have a tour of. There are no interiors whatsoever. Sure, I'd like to see the engine room, but I don't know how many people would pay money to see that. So in addition to the several million dollars it would take to paint it, there's almost nothing to look at inside. It would take additional tens of millions for there to be something to even start generating revenue.

Thought this was going to be something political but then noticed the thumbnail background 👍😆
