Have I Wasted My Life Making YouTube Videos??? Have I Wasted My Life Making YouTube Videos???

Oh Fran! Don't beat yourself up. I have spent a life doing not what I wanted but felt I had to, to keep may family provide for. But one of my hero's said " Life is what happen to your whilst your busy making other plans" And it is true. I really enjoy your videos, but if you are that unhappy, jump off the wheel, I know it is much easier to say than do. But meanwhile, do what to you seem to do best. Or you wouldn't be making videos. Try to stay positive, and thanks for or the great moments you have given me watching you.

So far I have made 439 videos for YouTube, I've kept copies. The quality is average and they range from my preaching, holidays, lego builds, Terry's Poems, my walk with a Dwarf II telepscope, etc. I have 130 subscribers and most feed back is positive. If you want to watch them fine. I've kept copies so my grandson has something to watch and listen to when I'm long gone :-)

No you have not wasted any of your time making YouTube videos. You have brought pleasure, information, instruction and inspiriration to thousands of people.

Fran, if you measure your life wasted, you're using the wrong yardstick. To be concerned with leaving something behind is like the pharohs making pyramids. Part of your worth is intangible: there are those in the audience you will never know, nerdy and awkward introverts, who are inspired and fascinated by your teaching, and yes whether you admit it or not you are teaching. That intangible priceless impact on someone in the present here and now is the real contribution you have made to people around the world! So please don't think your life wasted, that is not true. You're smart enough to see that.

Hell NO! Most of us have a little of the "eternal student" gene, but not enough to keep it from being swamped by the travails of daily living. We rely on you all too few that DO have the flame to pick away at those threads and unfurl those small wonders that exist in all our worlds. For that, you have our undying gratitude. I dunno what the answer is but I'm sure you'll devote serious thought to it, so keep sharing, good and bad. Predictions are notoriously hard, especially of the future (I've heard)

I don't have any answers to the human condition, the best I can do is a few quotes: John Lennon - life is what happens when you are busy making other plans. Douglas Adams - hang the sense of it and keep yourself occupied. Frankie Boyle (Scottish comedian) - Nothing matters. We're essentially all highly evolved monkeys clinging to a rock that's falling through space, and the rock itself is dying. I doubt any of those helped.

No you haven't but I'd recommend setting something up to upload to other platforms such as Odysee so Youtube don't have all the power to penalize and intidimate over trivial things. There will always be someone looking for a video on something useful and one thing you are not is the many clickbait trolling videos I come across with no technical appeal but with load blasting music. Also the annoying phone resolution videos where they copy parts of the picture and display them on the sides where they are blurred out, move and are larger and brighter than the actual video playing and are very distracting putting me off. From making guitar pedals, playing instruments to teardowns and manufacturing things. Not a waste at all maybe under represented for the things you do.

Wow, Fran. I watch YouTube for entertainment and education. I'd love to watch videos of you working on these projects you're passionate about. I do hope you get some time off and give yourself some time away from the YouTube hampster wheel. Take care.

I think this is a convergence of many things. The platform ignores creators when it doesn't actively seek to harm their work. But I think we may have reached peak YouTube. There'll always be core audience, but like many thinks it'll wax and wane. And if my own habits are an indication YT isn't the destination it used to be. But it doesn't help that I often stop getting shown new videos by followed creators.

John Verne

As for youtube channel "peak", my channel has also gone slowly downhill since 2022.

EEVblog

It wouldn't vanish with a single button click if you had uploaded them to the other platforms like Odysee. LBRY in particular allows individuals to host your videos and keep them going on the public platforms. If Youtube nuked my channels my videos would still be publicly available on half a dozen different platforms, including my own server. As for books, art, music etc, the same fate awaits the obscure. Youtube is no different. The longevity of appreciation of your work depends upon your popularity, unless you build a giant pyramid or something.

EEVblog

Understood. It's a modern day, crazy situation.

MrBelmosan

I think you and I are about the same age, and this is the time we start facing our mortality and wondering what we’ve really done. Most people live in quiet obscurity and are only remembered ever more faintly by family. And most of us have to do work that’s not very fulfilling to support our interests. By doing what you do - sharing your art, your projects, your interests - you do bring some joy to those of us who follow you. That’s more than most people can say.
