Adversity And Age

I can't say it gets easier to deal when you have years behind you. It should, but then again...

I'd show up but I'm ~1960 miles away. Dang!

I've definitely learned to let things slide that I used to pounce on. And I speak more optimistically because of it - which is weird. I'm not more optimistic; I just am more limited than I used to be, and I am more aware of my limits than I used to be.

Ageing has been much on my mind recently.

I'm turning 67 in a few months and have to constantly reassess what I'm physically capable of. I'm increasingly having days where everything not needed for basic survival has to wait.

Yes, definitely - you have to be feeling it to play. And honestly I go through long stretches where I just am not feeling it.

We'll hold you to that David! :)

Playing guitar, and making music in general, requires a certain state of mind. It's reassuring to know you've gone years without playing, as I've sometimes felt bad about doing this, but something that brings joy shouldn't turn into a source of guilt. I love listening to what you have to say on these more abstract topics... you could write an excellent book! It's interesting to look at ourselves and try to make sense of how we react in situations and how that varies with experience, increased self-understanding, and changes in the way we prioritise our energy.

For decades I've been going to start pencil sketching again, something I haven't really done since school. Six months ago I made a start and bought pencils, paper an easel and setup a space to work. Any month now I'm going to sit down and actually start sketching, I promise.

So true about being older. I find that I prioritize what to do next in a way that I wouldn't know how to when I was younger. When younger I would want to kind of handle everything and be 'impressive'. As you say, some tasks can be bad for you (health-wise physically and mentally) and also just useless to get the outcome that you want. So much time was wasted trying things out that didn't work out. Age/Experience helps us avoid those dead ends. But physically, we are not what we used to be, and so have to be more selective as to what we spend our energy and time on.

Similar with me. I really want to start playing my Fender again but too many other things to ponder/start/work on first.

I've pondering these points since the livestream. Age certainly changes things, experience yes, but ability no. I'm much more circumspect now.
