Free Members - Join The Team!

Since Patreon began offering Free Memberships last year I have accumulated about 500 Free Member followers to this Patreon FranLab page, but of course none of you who are Free Members have access to the sneak previews and other posts that I put here, so why not join us?

If all of you who are following FranLab on Patreon as Free Members would put in just a Deuce membership then you would all insure that FranLab would be on the air for another year! So, if you are a Free Member please consider jumping in and becoming a genuine Patron. You'll get early access to all my videos and other posts, and I will thank you personally!

So come on - Join Us!

Gotcha

Cal

It is mostly that Patreon was begun as a means for artists and content creators to get funding for projects, but last year the executives decided that the real money for Patreon would be to be a social network, but I see these as really two separate things.

This tangent thread isnt about FranLab. I have no issue at all with Fran or FranLab or any of the content here. Its why I chose to support. This is about Patreon in general.

Cal

Indeed, and I hope not. It just seems weird to my small brain why someone would want to exclude non-paying subs. Seems like it would be the opposite of what one would want if inclussion and visibuility was a goal. YT isnt the only mechanism by which one may find Fran content. I wouldnt think a creator would want to exclude folks from this platform from a list just because its purpose is mainly monetary.

Cal

You're a new Top Patron Cal, so I'm not sure why you'd think that about This. Is there something wrong?

Fran Blanche

That's not what's being implied at all. YouTube is for supporting creators with views, likes, and comments, but Patreon was designed for those who want to (and have the means to) support monetarily. Fran has always made it clear that there's no pressure to contribute. My guess is that it's actually difficult for Fran to make posts like this one, and something she'd rather not have to do. However, there are people who might not have considered pledging before who now will. Which is good for everybody who would really like to see FranLab continue.

So followership isnt enough these days. Ppl need to give you their money too...? Loathsome.

Cal

Pay money or dont pay money. Not a complex issue. Seems fair to me.

Cal

I actually assumed it was for the opposite reason. A subtle psychological nudge to join a paid tier. If I’m a “follower” and it doesn’t cost me, that just makes me feel like I’m on Twitter or something. But if I’m called a “free member”, then I feel like a bit of a cheapskate or a freeloader. That’s just me though.

Creators should at least have the option to turn off free memberships if they want to. Seems weird that it even exists. I guess it just enables Patreon to get more people using their platform by removing the pay wall... wasn't that the whole point though? 😟

The Free Membership let's someone directly express interest without committing funds, which is good for some creators who have set rather high minimum membership prices. My preference is to support lots of creators at lower levels, with only a few special creators (like Fran!) at higher levels. My hope is that all creators would offer $2 levels.

It's just part of Patreon's platform enshittification, renaming "follower" to "free member" for I'm not sure what reason. That participation prize feel-good factor? Maybe.
