Introductory Fountain Pens!

The new Pilot Kaküno is not the first to claim to be the best 1st fountain pen - it's not even the first Pilot pen to claim that - but I'll take an objective look at it here. Enjoy!

Introductory Fountain Pens!

Fran, did you know that the NASA merch store has official NASA logo fountain pens? They're two different Lamy pens, the Safari and the Vista. I've got one of each, one white with blue lettering, one blue with white lettering. They're typical Lamy pens, just with the NASA imprint, mostly the worm logo. UPDATE: The ones I got were on SpaceTrader. They're out of stock on the Vista FP but still have Safaris. ShopNasa has some different ones. Fisher Space Pens are a classic staple, but they're not fountain pens, so I didn't mention them before. Montgrappa has a couple of different NASA related pens, but they're in the "small used car" price range, so never gonna get one of those unless I win the lottery real big.

Another good brand of disposable pens is Thornton's. They have great office color pens (black, blue, red), and sets with a lot of different colors. I like to carry a couple as penablers if someone wants to try fountain pens. There's another very common cheap disposable with the "Snoflake" brand. They're translucent plastic with a snap on cap and a Lamy-style nib. They cost next to nothing, and come in a wide range of colors. I haven't noticed them drying out badly, as the cap is decently sealed, and I've had these pens for years.

I started with the Preppy as well. I've got quite the collection now. In fact, just before I got to the email linking to this video, I just bought the current "Goldspot Dip" mystery box from Goldspot. I'm eager to see what they send. It's supposed to be a good deal, so we'll see. After the Preppy, I got a set of 4 pens that turned out to be clones of the TWSBI Eco, by a company called Lanxivi Yongsheng. They have several different brands, I'm told. Then I got the Rainbow Forest pen by Hongdian, a gorgeous titanium rainbow finish, even on the nibs. I'm a sucker for that titanium rainbow! I've gotten some very nice pens from Jinhao, Hongdian, Conklin, Monteverde, Majohn, and Kaweco. I backed a couple of fountain pen Kickstarters, like the Banju by Artimber, and the Nova Titanium Pocket Pen by Namisu. I have a handful of more unusual fountain pens, like a tiny crowquill Maru nib used for cartography that is popular for manga, just like the Osprey Madison has a nib assembly that lets you use a Zebra G as a fountain pen instead of just a dip pen for mangaka.

As a life-long fountain pen user and collector, I find these low-end pen reviews interesting. I've made it a habit to purchase a pen whenever I was traveling to a new city or country and I've also shopped at markets and thrift stores back in the day when folks didn't know what valuable fountain pens were and you could pick up a Parker 51, Cross or Waterman for .50 cents to a buck. I've always used a good quality converter for any cartridge pen I acquired and never had starting problems or the mess of cartridges. Some have no problem with them but I find them messy. When I was working I used a different pen every day to keep them all in service. I've got everything from Lamys to a Mont Blanc Meïsterstuk that I use once a year or so and it always starts and writes without skipping even though it was filled years ago. I've rebuild about a dozen Esterbrooks back when you could get bags of parts on eBay for a few bucks; now they are $50 each and you can't tell if they are actually working until you get them. Sorry for the ramble but I just wanted to share the delight of fountain pens and the memories they can bring back when you recall where you got each one and the feel of your own excellent writing instrument over a bic or some no-name scratchy pen. Find your simple bliss every day; pens are great for that!

Always happy to see a pens and pencils video! So sweet! This looks like a nice one, I like the clear case too.

I have always said that I came for the Apollo DSKY but stayed for the pens and pencils.

Next to me I have one of your prior recommendations, a Platinum Preppy! It presently contains no ink, because I let a cartridge dry out, and after a thorough cleaning, I decided to wait on the next cartridge until I need it. The pen and its cartridges are sealed in a ziplock on a shelf next to my desk where I see it every day. It's shocking how little handwriting I've done this millennium. Edit: My next fountain pen will likely have a reservoir that will be easy to empty. Or I may try a goose quill! Edit 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzJdMYFnRD4 Duh.
