When You Know You're Successful

I'm glad I get to do what I do.

When You Know You're Successful When You Know You're Successful

I'm not just proud to be a FranLab Patron, but also delighted to share the fantastic journey you take us on. We share a lot - our age, much philosophy, and a healthy curiosity for the world and what we can do in it. Even the differences are good - your cool Philly sass versus my Scouse humour. Thank you Fran! 👍

For me, a big part of success is gratitude, simply being aware of the good no matter what else is going on. Especially when times are tough, keeping track of "all the little things" provides balance and motivation to persevere. A similar part of success for me is to keep problems within their proper scope, to not let them swell and expand to cause excess stress or emotional distress. My favorite question I ask myself: "Is this a First World problem I'm having?" That is, problems within an otherwise good life are seldom life-threatening problems, and shouldn't be treated as such! This, again, helps me maintain a balanced perspective, and to deploy my resources with consideration and focused will. These become doubly important when mental and/or physical health is involved. Adapting to a new reality is always tough, but it isn't "all or nothing", especially when it is broken down into manageable pieces. The above perspectives help me greatly to keep on keeping on!

I think most people view Fran's channel and Adam Savage's channel as places to see interesting gadgets and learn about making things. What I get most from both of them are the interesting stories and life lessons they share. The cool gadgets and stuff, yeah they're great, but the best stuff is the--let's just call it wisdom, or maybe just plain old good advice--that you get from them. All of it delivered in an effective and entertaining fashion.

I think you would be doing your experiments even if you didn't have FranLab. It's just in your nature to be curious about technical things and you feed that curiosity by making things come alive. You just have a global audience now and they get to share in the activities that come natural to you, but not to many others. I also wish I had my "20s energy" as I have far too many projects and can't do the 18 hour day thing anymore either. I truly admire all that you do as we are the same age.

This one felt like a FranCast in video form! 😃 Success is subjective but I agree with you - getting to a place where you can afford to dedicate time to doing things you love is a main marker of success. Freedom is everything. I think it's nice that you aren't affected by the adoration of your fans.
