A Career In Aviation (1974)

Another 16mm film from my collection in a series about careers that was  made for high school students, but this one made in Philly!   As usual I  transferred this reel with my own Telecine and corrected as best I  could.  Enjoy!

Nice testament to pre-deregulation aviation fantasies. Good to see lots of the L-1011 aircraft, now long gone. The salary numbers actually work perfectly as-is for the typical commuter aircraft pilot pay today. Nice big round storage CRTs in the control centers. IBM mainframes ran all that. The World Trade Center buildings had just been topped off the year before and were still mostly empty in 1974. Love seeing all that electromechanical instrumentation working. Go to my "library"? My "guidance counselor?" Sheeeeeeeit, the high school I attended just passed out leaflets for all the military branches. Love that 70s hair too! Great find Fran!!!

I love that humongous torque wrench at 11:23 that takes 2 people to turn, with a third one bracing the other side.

Although many of the clips depict General Aviation (non airline) aircraft in this film almost no mention is made of the many jobs manufacturing, maintaining and operating the smaller aircraft. About half of all aviation jobs at the time didn't involve airlines.

I see! The reversed soundtrack is to evade the electronic weevils. So how did you split the soundtrack??

Another great find, Fran, thank you.

1974. Just in time to join the Air Traffic Controller Union.
