Wondergram (1978)

Saturday Morning Cartoons like this 16mm film from my own collection  tried in vain to get American kids to abandon their pints, pounds, and  °F and love the metric system.  You'll pry my yardstick out of my cold  dead hand!!!!!  As usual I transferred this reel with my Telecine and  adjusted as much as is possible.  Enjoy!

Beautiful display. Thanks for getting the flicker-free shot in there! In the mid 90's I was working in a custom furniture shop in Tucson. Such a sad-happy place... The radio there was always tuned to the AM talk. So one day there was some news about how metric was gonna take over the USA, and the jocks were pulling off hilarious cold leads, saying things like "It's 48.523AM in digital time, welcome to the morning show..." super hilarious.

I remember there was a big push for adopting the Metric system in the mid 70s. But by high school it seemed to vanish as my Mechanical Drawing class was always in inches. It's odd, but I do see most new measuring tapes and rulers with both systems on it. A 1964 Craftsman measuring tape I found in my grandfather's stuff was exclusively in inches/feet. The thing was built like a tank, in America, and the spool retraction mechanism STILL works. Oh, how I wish I could go back in time and buy some true quality tools.

I was born in Australia in 1965 so I was taught both (and old style cursive). I still only understand people's height in feet and inches, but it's the metric system for me as in all honestly, it's pure genius and a mathematical marvel in regards to its interconnectedness.

Steph Traeger

Always metric for me, never use imperial measurements. Anyway, I'm off for a pint while I listen to some 12 inch records. Might have a quarter pound burger for me tea.

Most things in the UK are now metric but not everything, road signs show speed limits and distances in miles, beer is sold by the pint and although petrol (gasoline) is priced in gallons on the forecourt the pumps measure it in litres. One thing which surprised me when working in various European countries and America is that tape measures and rulers generally only have one scale, centimetres in Europe and inches in America, whereas UK tapes and rulers almost always have both.
