Strangely Rare Fossil LED Watch Restoration

Comments

At around the same timeI had one that was the exact same 'action,' but it was the chrome band and a round red crystal (with 'FOSSIL' engraved & painted white).

No soldering, all microscopic bonding wire (microwelding) and cast over in acrylic (the bubble lens).

I was in an abandoned watch shop back in the mid 80s and found 3 bags of those inserts with the bubble LEDs and potted-over chip. It turned out they were using the same electronic module in a variety of different watch housings. I don't think is was for deception, but a method of reusing the same guts for all kinds of watch styles. I forgot all about them until your video. Thanks for the memories!

No use replacing the solder on the back of the board where the LEDs are soldered in? LED watches are in huge demand. Big $$$ on eBay. Mechanical watches are my passion. 0.3mm pivots spinning inside jewel bearings at 36,000 beats per second. The new Seiko constant force Kodo tourbillon is the ultimate movement. Seiko's mic drop/in your face to the Euro snob watchmakers' moment.

One of my favourite watches died recently, it was a Casio Cosmo Phase and had a small orrery on the dial showing the approximate positions of all the planets. They don't seem to be that rare on eBay, but they cost a lot more than the $58.39 I paid in 1991.

I had a watch like that LED display as a teenager. It went through batteries fast. I got my first Casio LCD watch a few years later and the battery lasted ten years.

Nuts 'n' Proud

Nice! You definitely picked the better case. That is one to be proud of. I feel like the bezel is shifted slightly to the right in its dovetail. Is that a trick of the camera angle or maybe my imagination? Cheers!

Looking forward to watching when I get some free time. Sweet!
