Challenge

Comments

Good discussion! I think "change" and "challenge" are interchangeable sometimes. I know at work that technology, tools, procedures and group dynamics are kind of "forced challenges". If I don't accept or adopt a challenge at woirk, there are consequences. Then, on my own time, if I don't have a challenging problem to work on, I get anxiety as it seems to fill the void left from lack of a challenge. Beer and TV just don't work for me. And you're right about age increasing the challenges as the body slowly deteriorates weather we like it or not. The mind too, if not kept challenged. A project I started, that I intend to go on forever seen at: http://www.petergottlieb.com/docs/747_Restoration_For_Sim.pdf is a lot harder 13 years later in terms of my joints contorting in awkward ways and hurting like hell. It used to be rather easy to work under the floor of that thing installing servos and wiring and whatever else. But reading 747 technical manuals, planning interfaces and restoring equipment keeps my mind running as I try and solve technical challenges. Physical challenges come with age. If I don't stay physically active, it hurts a hell of a lot more to contort myself under some panel or console. But I wanted a challenge so complex and open-ended so I would never have to be without a constant challenge. Smaller projects are challenges that I sometimes fail at, but only I know about those and sometimes I meet the challenge years later after I've learned more. I think for people like us, that can't shut our minds off, are simply hard-wired to find and meet new challenges. We're doomed to "dream a dream" and as long as the neurons keep firing, challenge is the only option.
