It is absolutely wrong that the deaths of the 600 migrants on the boat were overshadowed by the five in the submersible. Foolish rich people dying are seen as a cautionary narrative, whereas mass deaths of the poor -- and I hate to say this -- are seen as commonly happening. But death is death and each of these people's lives in both vehicles had equal value.

The Oceangate tragedy serves to lay bare the dangers of calling safety a statist plot that stifles innovation. That was made a fashionable band wagon by libertarians.

Fran, you're right. The media focuses on five rich guys buying a very expensive burial at sea and mostly ignores the horrible loss of life in that terrible immigrant boat sinking. I fell nothing for the rich guys. They willingly got on something held together with a lot of zip ties and controlled by consumer electronics and paid the price. Darwin Awards comes to mind here. I actually DO feel bad for those hundreds seeking a better life so desperately that they died trying. None of them deserved to die and that truly is sad. And maybe I'm too risk-adverse that I simply won't get in something with "experimental" spelled out on a release form. But some humans have done stupid stuff for far less money. Wikipedia has a list of people who died trying to reach the peak of Mt. Everest and there seems to be multiple deaths per year on that mountain. Every damn year! I have zero sympathy for those "adventure seekers". Geez, I know! I'll hike up this massive mountain where it's cold, unpredictable and there's almost no oxygen. Yeah, that's a great idea! Many times the bodies cannot be recovered and they are actually used as navigation aids, like some guy known just as "greenboots". Just dumb. Completely stupid beyond all reason. I want to know who paid for bringing up the debris of that submersible. What is there to learn from something that was so obviously poorly built? There's only a handful of these kinds of submersibles in the world, so it's not like it warrants an NTSB type of investigation where people died in what are expected to be well built and certified aircraft there are thousands of. They should have left it down there as a warning to others "don't do stupid stuff!" People always will, though. There are illegal tours of Chernobyl where people willingly walk into 20 chest X-rays, or more, of radiation exposure. The fun there is..... what? And don't get me started with the teenagers taking pictures of themselves at Auschwitz smiling from inside an oven and taking smiling selfies on the railroad tracks leading into the main gate. WHY have these people come to my planet?

I appreciate these live-stream excerpts. I don't always have the time for the extended dance version.
