Thanks Fran! I knew you would do this stuff justice and pick it apart as I did. I remember throwing in a baggie of incandescent fiber optic digit displays of different types. I was told the fiber optics were done to provide maximum contrast for front-on viewing in sunlight environments. The A/B versions of F-18s used these kind of light pipe displays on the panel mounted onto the front of the HUD. There were text and 7 segment versions on that panel. You could tune radios by entering the frequency in the scratchpad line on the HUD, then press the appropriate button next to where you wanted the numbers to go. I can't even imagine what those front panels cost!
