Yea, this is real.  What a pickle!  I guess my new music projects will have to wait a bit.

This is so amazing! And I really respect the care with which you're dealing with this. I have a strong preservationist instinct as well and I'd also not touch the machine again if I found it contained something like this.

Hi Fran, perhaps you can compare Don't Do Me Like That with the stems heard in this video from Produce Like A Pro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zoCsq-oBjA. In any case, this video shows that the stems are 'out there'. Maybe you can get in touch with Warren? Can you determine the make/model of the hard drive? Maybe either pull it & replace with another or make a digital bit copy of the original??

Awesome 👏

Wow! You somehow became the curator of the Tom Petty recording archives. Three songs worth at least. There must be more of those mixers out there. No need to sacrifice your own equipment. The real question is HOW those tracks were legally recorded by Tascam. Did you check all the other "channels" to see if there is other hidden stuff on that mixer? Seems like you need to perform forensic a deep-dive into that mixer's drive. As far as music and video sync problems? Geez when everything was analog trying to edit music to video was incredibly agonizing. If the audio heads in whatever VTR(s) was used were adjusted wrong, or you fed the video into something that had to digitze and then output an time-base corrected output, that could introduce delays. Laying the music first, and editing to the beat, was usually fine. But starting with the video was just a nightmare to deal with. Editing video in the late 80s was a challenge because even the best tape formats can introduce a delay, or offset between the audio and video. Great historical find! I would want the tracks preserved as well.

A little Googling shows that his estate is now managed by Tom Petty Legacy LLC with details at https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_ca/201930510235 and https://www.bizapedia.com/ca/tom-petty-legacy-llc.html. Not to be confused with the Tom Petty Legacy tribute band.

Very cool! I’m a Tom Petty fan.
