Diesel (1968)

Why are Diesel engines so polluting?  Well, without wanting to make that  point this 16mm film from my collection sure shows how this reputation  is made possible.  Loaded with great cut-away models and animated  illustrations, this GM sponsored film really sells the simplicity of the  down-and-dirty industrial diesel engine.  As always I transferred this  film with my own Telecine and color corrected where possible.  Enjoy!

Diesel (1968)

Comments

I've got a 1980 VW Dasher with a 1.5 normally asperated Diesel. Still running.

The science and history of the development of fuel injection from it's original configurations to the modern day systems, (typically Bosch), deserves a study of it's own... I has a used '84 Jetta diesel that averaged 64 mpg, still going strong with 280,000 km on it... I sold it to someone who salvaged the drivetrain and scrapped the rest of the car... I miss her.

That was actually still educational. They really did go through a lot of trouble to present the cutaway engine and all the graphics of the individual components. I believe they omitted "glow plugs" that are used to get the diesel started in extreme cold, then not used after combustion starts. But it was a great little film that I did learn from. A+ Fran!
