Manufacturing Precision Fittings (1957)

This 16mm reel from my collection is a work print and has no soundtrack,  but the unedited rushes show many workstations and production steps in  manufacturing hydraulic lines and fittings from raw stock in the 1950's.   Filmed in gorgeous Kodachrome, many of the shots are not ideally  focused and many are underexposed, but still an intriguing document to a  largely bygone era of American manufacturing.  As always this was  transferred using my own Telecine.  OH - and you get a little bonus at  the end.  What is it?  Hell if I know!  Enjoy!

Manufacturing Precision Fittings (1957)

Comments

The kinds of basic protections that are seen today did not exist in industry before OSHA and environmental regulations.

Yeah, those are definitely hydraulic hoses and fittings for the aerospace industry. Interesting that I did not see ONE caution sign for ANYTHING and no big red mushroom buttons marked "EMERGENCY OFF". That and dozens of other OSHA violations. I like the look of anodized aluminum, but it takes something akin to electroplating in some some very serious acids to accomplish. I'm sure the waste acids back then are still buried in barrels underground someplace in a Superfund site. Meanwhile, the B-52s and KC-135s that use those hydraulic hoses are STILL in active service. Maybe grandpa's hydraulic fittings still fly?
