Visualising 4d is hard so lose one special dimension. Space is now a plane. Above is the future. Below is the past The plane is “Now” It is advancing upwards at the speed of light, C. The past goes down to the Big Bang. All points in “Now” are the same distance in time from the Big Bang. A surface with all points on it some distance from a common point is a sphere. So “Now” is a sphere growing from the Big Bang into the future at C. The value of C is reduced locally by the presence of energy and matter. This reduction of speed of Now into time causes continual deformation of space-time So on planets, the expansion of now is held back and space-time is stretched. This is gravity. Objects stationary in space time appear to accelerate towards the centre of mass. Very large collections of matter reduce C to zero. The Black Holes “Now” is stuck at the time they formed. So the 2D space + time is a growing bubble, pocked by pits around matter concentrations and with some very deep black holes.
