Sprechen Sie Deutsch? (1964)

The lesson of this 16mm film is simple - If you fly to Frankfurt, and a creepy guy walks up to you asking if you speak German, and if you tell him that no, you are actually learning German, and he hands you a rose and asks you to wait while he corrals other people who are also learning German - this is important - Do NOT take the rose!  Just RUN!   Okay...   enough learning for today.  Enjoy!

Re: Wien - another of my favorite cities. St Stephen’s is a great stop. I was lucky enough to be there (on our honeymoon) the week they dedicated the new organ that replaced the one that had been through the wars (literally). It was a week of musical pyrotechnics performed by a literal who’s who of organ virtuosity, showing what the new organ could really do. Words cannot do justice to the power and majesty the instrument could muster in the hands of giants. By wonderful accident, I had been there five years earlier when they were raising money for the organ. I still have the sweatshirt they were selling. Life’s beautiful accidents.

The most memorable detail from my first visit to the land side of FRA is the the luggage carts have the BMW roundel and they know how to use escalators flawlessly (better than many people). That one thing captured the essence of German Engineering for me. And the fact that nobody seemed to think it was in any way remarkable. And returning from my first visit to the ex-USSR, I was never so glad to see a Hilton as the one that’s part of FRA, even if it was because of a busted connection.

Where is the ferris wheel? And the hammer dulcimer soundtrack?

Hi, native German speaker as well - also: My name is Rose. If you happen to see me in Frankfurt at the airport, I will probably be too shy to talk to you. 🥺 - Also: I am harmness… no need to run :D

My first time through the Frankfurt airport, on Lufthansa from Philly, we were connecting to an Austrian Airlines flight. Did you know that the spell “Vienna” incorrectly on the departure board signs? The Germans spell it “Wien”. I had heard of wein bridges - but not a place name Wein! We did have a 5 hour layover in Wein for a flight to Larnaca, Cyprus. The Austrian Airlines cabin attendant suggested that we take a trip into town to see St Stephen’s Plaza. The crew from both Lufthansa and Austrian spoke very good English. My ancestry is pure German but I never learned it. Prior to WW1 there were more German Language newspapers in my home town of Covington, KY than English.

That was really disturbing 🤭 and brought back memories of being creeped out by similar films when I was learning German in the early seventies. I don’t think I saw this one though, but yeah…

As a native German speaker, and having been through the Frankfurt airport a lot of times... it's still a creepy place where you get yelled at a lot.
