Watch Mr. Wizard (1964)
Added 2021-12-01 14:59:32 +0000 UTCThis 16mm Kinescope of episode No.166 of Don Herbert's popular science show was recorded in New York in the early 1960's. It is unfortunate that this reel has so much sprocket damage through the middle of the spool, but still worth watching. The date code on the Eastman film stock is 1964, but taking into consideration the 14 year run of the program series with over 500 shows in total and the episode number 166 on the reel, it would put this episode much earlier than 1964, but who knows when it was originally recorded. In true Kinescope style a film camera was placed in front of a high resolution CRT to make this recording and you see the signature contrast gradient, image distortion, and solarization that are characteristic of the 1950's era Iconoscopes. Here's to Mr. Wizard in his absolute prime!!!

It’s wonderful how clever and intuitive people can be before they spend 12 years being convinced that “Science is Hard” and “Math is Hard” and that rational thought is just one more pointless opinion. In the civilized world that is rightly considered child abuse.

I grew up in the Philly area in the '60's and remember getting up early Sunday mornings to "Watch Mr. Wizard". It must have been on either channel 3, 6 or 10 as I don't think channel 12 was on the air yet. Thank you again!

2021-12-01 18:51:39 +0000 UTCHaving been born in1946, I grew up watching this show. Maybe because of Mr Wizard I have always had a love of science and electronics. One of my brothers went on to get his MS in Physics and became a college teacher. Can you imagine trying to make a science show like this "live" these days????

2021-12-01 17:16:01 +0000 UTCI was around 9 or 10 years old when this was made. At the time, this was my favorite program. I actually believed that the kids lived in the neighborhood and just stopped by. I wished that I lived nearby so that I could stop in to Watch Mr. Wizard.
