Repairing The Sony DT-30 Television Snooze Box

A long repair and a lot of editing to condense the experience down to less than an hour, but worth it.  Let me show you the inside and out of the Sony DT-30 Digital Timer, a luxury piece of kit from a time when nodding off in front of the TV was a delicacy - and waking up to the TV was something new altogether.   Return to the 70's in style.... and Enjoy!

"Back in my day" the remote was on a long wire, or it used ultra-sonics. I can't remember an infra-red remote before the early 80s, though there must have been some. During my time at the BBC in the 70s, I did a stint in charge of an installation team at TV Centre in West London. A new Controller of BBC1 had just taken over and he had his office completely revamped. My job was to install 3 24" TV's on one side of the room with remotes to his desk on the other side. All wired, including the channel selection which was on a rotary dial. I can't remember how many channels, cut including the volume we were using cable with 25 pairs! Three 50 ft runs of 50 way, plus custom made switch boxes. Luckily I had two assistants and an expert wire-man. We had to call in a carpenter to take up skirting board so we could hide the cables!

I don't know when that particular construction appeared, but I remember being in Las Vegas in the mid-90s at the NAB Convention. At the time I was consulting for an American company that owned a number of manufacturers of Broadcast TV Hardware. One of the companies was from the UK and they had taken me to demo their kit. All the tech people and demonstrators were taken out to dineer, and I remember talking a youngster from California who used the phrase "back in your day" about me!

Aren't those wheel advance cams a form of geneva drive?

Wow the days when tops just lifted of without having to disconnect a million ribbon cables!

That Caution label doesn't apply to Senior IEEE members or Big Clive!

This obviously predates the wide use of TV remotes.

When did back in the day become a saying? I don't remember, it from my youth, in fact I only really recall hearing it first in the 2000s

Nice work Fran, I knew you were going to open it up again when I saw the dim wheel. :) It would have bugged me till I fixed it as well. Funny thinking back to when it took a box that complex to turn the tube on and off.

Very nice video! And the new green neon looks great. You have far more patience than I. I would have thrown the whole thing in the bin and gone for a drink. :)
