The simulation theory ignore the minor difficulty of representing the bits required to maintain the state of every object in the virtualized universe. and the storage requirements for all those representations.
The energy required to run the simulation is a problem, too. Where does it come from And how does that avoid an infinite regress?
And what happens if you feed the simulator to itself? It isn’t long before you can wave at the halting problem as the requirements for the representations keep exploding. There are lot of quarks in even the tiniest bit of
matter as it is known.

By the way, the notion that the universe was created not actually for "all of us," but for me alone, and is there merely to provide context for me, is called solipsism. Most of us grow out of this by age three. Without going any further into the ramifications, the former guy is a clear example of how solipsism evolves in adulthood.

What we do know, sort of, is that about four turtles down it starts to get exceedingly weird, and the weirdness then increases from there. There is some evidence even, about six levels deep, that we don't really exist at all.

I''ll smash the doubt button in my brain, but your input is still appreciated.

While listening to your 2010 essay, I could hardly keep myself from screaming "yes! yes!". This is the best, not simply one of the best, anthropological analyses I have ever heard. You are truly a well-rounded intellect.

This is one your best videos I've watched so far.
It might interest you to know (if you already don't) that the human species went through a process of self-domestication some 50 ky ago. That was probably before even tribes existed, but certainly long before the invention of agriculture which spurred the gross changes in social structures that are present today.
But there's still "neurodivergent" people being born today that are "hypo-domesticated", like autistic and ADHD. Autistics in particular have traits that are completely unsuitable for modern world, but would be advantageous in environments before self-domestication process started. It is not surprising then that autistic people disproportionately lean to leftist or extreme-leftist views and are more commonly non-religious, though spirituality is still common.
There's a recent article that talks a bit more about self-domestication, though its understanding of autism and other neuro-divergencies is still abysmally poor:

The real question though is, if life is a simulation, where are all the save points?

Hi Fran,
I was slightly aware of this theory and, as usual, you have cracked it for me with your talent for opening up complex-looking machines and showing us they're really made up of simple, interconnected components. Thanks!
Plus, you always rock relevant T-shirts...
Xanadu is one of my favorite movies. I like "Dancin" my way through life because you have to believe we are "Magic." (Though I sometimes "Suddenly" wish we could all be "Suspended in Time.")
Anyways, whatever the explanation, I'm glad that "All Over the World" there are still many people who are not struggling with the unfathomable mystery of existence and who are grateful to say, simply, "I'm Alive."
Glad you're one of them...
Best!

The really poisonous part of the simulation hypothesis is that it absolves its inhabitants of any responsibility to maintain or preserve their world. If you see the world as a simulation, you see it as a disposable thing.

My understanding of why we might be in a simulation is this: if there is only one real universe and beings in that universe are running simulated universes and as the simulations become more sophisticated they in turn run simulations, there could be countless trillions of simulations. Thus the probability is that we are in one of the many simulations rather than the only reality.

When I was much younger I had a theory that as you die you relive your entire life as a vivid series of flash backs. I then spent time wondering if I was living my real life or just reliving the memories as I died.
Of course I dismissed this theory until now 😱
