Hey Fran. When you mention "the blog", you mean this one here or http://www.frantone.com/designwritings/design_writings.html ? Or did I miss something (link to "the blog") ?

Oh yeah, I've had the exact same feeling for months. I've got about a dozen projects simmering at work, and it's so many that I can't seem to make headway on any of them! And it seems like every time I try to make some progress, there's some huge problem that sets the project way back. I did manage to push one project through to 95% completion, which was close enough to finished to put into production, and then my boss dropped another two even bigger projects on me! Then to make matters worse, they just announced they're going to consolidate two of our largest offices into one, so now we've got another huge project that we have to start planning for! In reality it's actually about a dozen individual projects, each of which is going to be complex and challenging, followed by the final move, which will also be huge. Anyway, good to see you're hanging in there. Hopefully I'll get some time this weekend to watch part two of the retrospective. Maybe I'll play it on my second screen while I work on one of my side projects!

I think us makers can all related to your comments Fran. I'm starting lots of little projects and then move on to something else without finishing anything. Usually, I find I work things out at the gym, often solving problems in my head, but now they've closed them down here I don't get that time. I hadn't realised just how much good it did me mentally (rather than just physically) getting to the gym until it was taken away from me. I completely know what you mean, we have our routines without really realising how beneficial they are and why our brains make us continue them, until we can’t do them of course. I like to call it Garbage Collection (a computing term) for when you have to stop everything by entering a routine of clearing the memory of old stuff, and those routines we almost subconsciously did and made a habit that allowed us to do just that are out of the loop now!

Fran, it's so true about the multiple project starts and about not getting to the end of any one of them so quickly. Being stuck at home (or in the lab) seems like a God-send at first but it makes the mind wander. I've ordered more books and parts and hardware in the last 10 months than in the last 10 years, hoping to get to projects I've had in my head for a long time. But it's definitely too much of a good thing and I find I'm stretched so thin that progress on any individual project goes at a snail's pace. But as the old carpenter said to the young apprentice -- every new job will add years to your life!

Fran, your vivid metaphor got a good laugh out of me. But then again, I've been told my sense of humor never progressed past the third grade, so that might not be a compliment. :-) Do what you need to do. And yeah, I'll definitely start following your blog. Thanks!

Here here. I hope your Stepmom makes a speedy recovery!

It's not that simple in the middle of a big crowded city where everything is unpredictable and people can be crazy on the street.

525,000 people dead in the US and people still think it won't happen to them. Pure narcissism. My dad's dead and my stepmom is recovering from Covid. They did all the right things. Masks are to protect OTHERS primarily and if others aren't wearing them, you're at risk. Denialism isn't data. The body count is. Wear a mask, stay away from people as best as you can until you're at least 1 month past your first vaccination. Epidemiology is a thing.

Fran, you can go outside. Put a N95 mask on and get out of the lab. The numbers are going down everywhere. I work outside and deal with customers that don't wear masks. You don't have to entrap yourself. Just take a break and don't get overwhelmed.

Maybe drive around on your motorbike every now and then, to clear your mind...

So much great stuff coming up Fran, I'm sorry that isolation has hit you so hard. I'm lucky that isolation suits my antisocial nature, or to put it better suits my social anxiety, I must go watch part II now!

yes, you play that guitar lady! 🙂

So, Philly is your creative dietary fiber? There for you no matter what, Fran.!
