Leaky Alkaline Batteries!!!!

Oh The Humanity!!!  We've all had this happen.  You've got a device that goes dead so you go to change the batteries and Whammo!  Why does this happen and what to do about it?  I will delve into these and other questions as I explore the wild world of alkaline batteries.  Enjoy!

Leaky Alkaline Batteries!!!!

Comments

btw- I was under the impression that Duracell manufactured Powercell as the industrial variety of their battery.

I have kind of moved on from batteries, to converting stuff to run off 5.1 volts USB. It's fairly simple thing to do and just using ohms law to calculate the resistor (if needed) and P=VI to check the power so that you can use the appropriate value powerwise resistor. No really rocket science but a damn good hack to save money and NO LEAkY Batteries either.

I saw a duracell battery blow up once and wreck my brother's brand new sinclair scientific calculator! (It was a while ago!)

Maybe some supercapacitors last very long too? Not very high energy density and probably they're all empty if you come back a month later, but at least you can recharge them.

The reality is that the economic principle that junk is more profitable than lasting resource conserving products is at the base of our society. I have also in more frustrated moments when discovering a destroyed device thanks to rotten batteries had the idea that leaking batteries are a significant factor in planned obsolescence engineering. Product life cycles are designed to service short term profit. Good analysis of consumer batteries and helpful ideas on how to deal with this problem. Thanks!

Dave/EEVBlog keeps trying to test this and cant seem to ever get any to fail like this, yet we all know it happens

Yeah. So nasty dealing with that. You forget a cheap electronic gadget you use every few years only to find it had 'sicked' all over the battery compartment. *bleah*

Whoa, GP Greencells. My workplace gets those in bulk, they're in all the multimeters we've got around the place. I'm curious about your experiences with silver button cells, though, they're probably a bit pricy but they're not supposed to leak, at least on paper.

I'm with Claes on this video! You gave me some very useful info. Thanks...
