New Austin Air Laboratory Filtration Machines

With every day turn turn turn.... Yes, I have switched out the Blueair machines for a set of Austin Air industrial purification machines that I think are much more suited to the needs of FranLab.  I go through unboxing, a mini-teardown of the sophisticated filter system, take some decibel readings for the various settings, and go over the specs for the machines.  Enjoy!

New Austin Air Laboratory Filtration Machines

You mentioned turning a screw backwards until the "click" - in my work as an electrical engineer, I work on things that will go under water in the ocean and stay - so everything has to be extremely reliable. So I mentioned this trick one day at work, and people said that is exactly right. So....thank you for helping me do a better job! I wish I could tell you more about what I do because it is really, really neat - you would love the lab I work in. I mean, we get to work with all kinds of equipment and run tests. We have a lot of rules, too, but that's no problem - because ultimately they make sense and go toward making the product more reliable.

I kind of see why they opted to use just the sheetmetal, if the filters last 5 years a pop, they should only need to be removed/replaced 6 times over a 30 year design life. I self-taught myself the wind-back and screw in method in the 80's (I was 6) pulling apart and fixing discarded tape decks, through trial and error and because my tools tended to be cheap nasty ones bought by family, if I tried to carve another thread, even in plastic posts, the screw drivers would tend to break before the plastic post. I have a (cheap Chinese brand) PVR which has run for 8 years now, I remove the 1TB HDD every 3 months for a .ts backup (that's about 30 times) and the sheet metal screws are still fine so they do last well if one is careful, the dange is of course, cross-theading them, or overtightening which. Hope you are well and these filters give you some relief, I have horrifically dry skin so have two units myself, as well as a deep cleaning vacuum.

Wow, these machines look very decent and well-built! Great idea from the manufacturer to offer some discount for changing filters in time, that encourages people to take care of their units :) And none of that "replace filters every month" extortion seen here! A 2 year change-interval is very reasonable.

Very Cool, love they did the refund .Hopefully these will fit the bill with no problems Take care William

Me too! I don't know where I picked up that technique, but I use it all the time, especially with self-tapping screws in plastic.

Oh, my post disappeared, not got the time to rewrite it, but the video was a blast of fresh air.

Is that a metric asston or imperial?

Eek! I've been violating your patent for years! Sorry. :D

Glad you got your money back from Blueair, but after your last video itโ€™s the only thing they could do to save face. Suppliers be warned, you donโ€™t mess with Fran ๐Ÿ˜„

That's funny because recently I watched a video in which a couple, that owns 3 crows and 2 magpies (rescues), reviewed this same machine, that they bought for the room in which they keep the birds most of the time and they seemed very happy with it.

I can't decide if this video sucks, or if it blows. ;^) Either way, I'm **SO** glad this is working better for you!

The new filters look built to last. Nice nothing to go wrong - no none-sense controls, too. Glad you got your money back on the Blueair filters. Thanks for sharing.

So happy that Blueair offered to take back their units. The Austin Air Labs items give a lot more confidence based on what you showed in the video (self-tapping screws and short power cord notwithstanding). Otherwise looks like a very well designed air filter. Breathe freely, Fran!

A wise decision I think, bearing in mind their (lack of) response to your queries. I'm up in the middle of the night taking medicine and drinking tea, due to a minor health issue (IBS), I'll watch it tomorrow.
