Electronic Project Kit Shootout! Elenco Vs. Science Fair

Oh Joy! In this video I take a trip to the past with something new - the  Elenco Electronic Playground 130 project kit that is definitely in the form and spirit of the classic Science Fair 150-In-1 kit that I had as a kid. I do a side by side comparison of the features of both kits, and give the Elenco 130 a try by doing a simple project.  Enjoy!

Electronic Project Kit Shootout! Elenco Vs. Science Fair

Comments

Been thinking how lucky I was to have so many sources for kits in the 70's. Heath Kit, Radio Shack, Lafayette Radio Electronics, The Olson Catalog. Knight Kits, Dynaco Dynakits. We had a wonderful electronics store a few miles away- Baynesville Electronics(RIP 2017) and even Heath Kit opened a store a few blocks East near Towson MD........ P.S. 1974 Olson Catalog and their 1971 with their "IN THE LAB" reports- https://www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Catalogs/Consumer/Olson-1971-Catalog-571.pdf +++ https://www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Catalogs/Consumer/Olson%20Radio-1974-Catalog.pdf

I also had a 200 in 1 from back in the 80s. The front panel was an improvement; you could build a radio and then put in on a shelf and use the front knobs/display for a tuner. I have so much nostalgia for that kit I just looked it up on ebay, and they made so many they're still around and pretty cheap. The 200-in-1 evidently cost around $45 at some point in the 80s, which is ~$140 in today's dollars.

Got it yesterday and loving it. I feel 12 again! 😊

The Elenco is still available.

I still have my Science Fair 200 in 1 kit (well, my son does). Not that he's used it much; he's more a coder than a hardware guy.

At a guess the long green wire is intended to be an antenna. It looks like all the wires are colour coded by length, with green the longest. Ewen

I built several of the Archer Radio Shack kits and Owned the 65 in 1 kit too.

Just found the EP-130 kit on Amazon UK for £35 which is about $45 so I had to buy it. Nostalgia, here we come!

Thank you!

I had one very similar to that from Tandy sometime in the 80s. It also got me interested in electronics.

I got, I think, a 100 in 1 set for Christmas in the mid 70s. It didn't have the LED display among other things, still one of the best Christmases ever, though.

I had so much fun with those kits growing up. I wish I still had them.
