I said I wasn't going to try to fix this BINA-VIEW but hey...  I'm on lockdown and very stir-crazy so I just went for it.  Enjoy!

BINA-VIEW II: The Repair!

Comments

Ok, So who's going to design the 3D printed version?

I actually spent about 4 hours working on it, and went through a lot of stuff that went nowhere which I left out of the video - so yea, when it finally worked it was quite a relief.

Fran Blanche

I'm trying to keep my mind on my work and looking forward to a time beyond this crisis.

Fran Blanche

I hope not the 'actual' peak - but thanks!

Fran Blanche

I'm sure that 3D printing fans will be making up templates for larger versions of this as we speak...

Fran Blanche

Very cool, you fixed it! Restored a bit of history.

Fantastic, well done Fran, I bet that gave you a great sense of satisfaction. Worth voiding the warranty for ! :-D

Dr Andy Hill

A - LOL

Dr Andy Hill

I was hoping you would look at trying to repair it, interested to see how it goes. Stay safe and don't go crazy. I am managing to stay sane with help from my medication.

Dr Andy Hill

This is Peak FranLab!

Andy Ihnatko

I can see why these didn't catch on.

Thanks for doing the repair! I was quite excited to see this video. :)

Mikeybg

Perhaps railway or airport arrival and departure displays???

Chuck Kirchner

It makes me wonder what these were used in. Maybe early stock market or bank displays? Anywhere you would only need numbers, letters and a plus or minus symbol

William

So glad you fixed it! I wonder if there's a way you could make a custom plate with your logo lol

Aly

It's apparently possible to turn CdS photoresistors, invented in late 19th century, into primative FETs ... so it would be fascinating to imagine a what-if of that.

Antony Curtis

You're Welcome.

Fran Blanche

If you like!

Fran Blanche

True, it would have been possible to make the display 150 years ago, but what could have possibly driven it?

Fran Blanche

Fran, you're an electro-mechanical genius! Thanks for giving in to your curiosity, and following through with the repair of the BINA-VIEW!

Is a teetertotter that moves the the other way a totterteeter?

Steampunk novels need to describe stuff using these kinds of display ... It's all tech which should be possible in the 19th century...

Antony Curtis

I knew the temptation would be too great to resist!

Boris von Shithousen

I could watch things like this all day, thank you Fran.

David Peaker

Ah, awesome that you decided to repair it. I understood your decision not to do it, but secretly hoped you'd change your mind.

Sprite_tm

What a fascinating device!
