The FranCast Episode 5: Time

Time... is flowing like a river.... to the sea.

Full disclosure - I am not an astrophysicist.  Please refer all questions to Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson.  Thank you.

I submit that i do experience what happens to it. Assuming this "block" universe model, what part of this model can explain this? I must admit that i don't know how to specifically describe "experiencing", but it does seem the model is missing something, and so is incomplete. Btw, time is clearly just as real as space in the block model, being a one of the coordinates in the block. (Also more complicated whats what given Relativity...) There is the added point that the "block" apparently has to contain quantum states.. Our models are.. models, not the actual universe, and taking the entire 20th century seriously, have this hard QM interpretation to deal with. I don't think people(in general) know the answer to the philosophical interpretation of these things, they have hypothesis..

Double split experiments etcetera also works for particles with mass, going way below the speed of light, so they do have time/distance in their reference frame..

Enjoyed this very much. Audio is a great medium and frees up room for visualizing the integrals, transforms, and dot products.

Do I detect an Alan Parsons reference in your podcast note

Interesting. My take. Reality is nothing more than a model in our minds built with information from our senses and information passed to us, that we agree on. We can synthesize parts of this model by drawing logical or sometimes illogical conclusions based on incomplete information. Humans have always tried to marry cause to effect, often not knowing the cause. For example not more than 500 years ago, it was believed that lightening was caused by Gods or Daemons. Some, I would say, still believe so as Gods and Daemons are part of their model and they lack the information in respect to the nature of static electricity. So time is imaginary (lunch time more so) and a construct of our model, I propose. On one hand it is the order in which information is received. It's metric is the period between events. The order of information coming in is always positive by definition, it is always additive. The propagation of information causes distortion of our reality model. We can locate a star some 400 light years away but we can't say with certainty that it even exists today. We wait for the next packet of information to follow the last, what happens next. I love it! We have similar perspectives on what existence really is. All that I would add is the thought that consciousness is not some special process, but it's just a (admittedly complex) process like the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen to make water. And free will is a illusory self-result of that process. After all, when "your" time is up and those process cease, your constituent molecules don't disappear from the universe. Certain processes end, as they always do, and others (decomposition, etc) start. From that perspective, "I" isn't a physical thing, but just a certain set of chemical processes, chemical process that imagine that they exist, and think, and cause things to happen.

Wow...gonna have to listen to that a few times but your descriptor as "living the animation" really had me pause to consider

I think about this as well. My take on entanglement and the "spooky action at a distance" isn't so strange a concept if you were to imagine yourself as one of the particles. When we "split" a light beam and observe entanglement behavior, we see the behavior from the perspective that there is time and distance between the particles. But if you consider the experience from the viewpoint of the particle, there is no time or distance in their reference frame. There is no "split" they are the same particle from their reference frame, so interaction is instantaneous because of speed of light eliminating of distance and time. We see the behavior as "spooky action at a distance" but that's just due to our reference frame, but from their frame there is nothing called "distance". Now from your perspective regarding a deterministic universe, since we're all made of quantum particles, we have trends of actions but have choices. We can decide to leave home without trousers on...or not...those are my challenges some days. We may feel trapped in circumstance, but we do have choices to make with the resources we have available. You chose not to fight eviction and move forward elsewhere -- you're just experiencing the outcomes of the decision tree. The branches are infinite. Action breeds further actions. Your efforts cultivated a support network which you didn't have before enabling you to move. You could have chose not to. You chose well.
