Rare 1973 Heathkit BUILD! Pt.2

Part Two!  This time I set out to assemble the main chassis, with some surprises along the way.  It seems that this will be at least a 4-part series, but I'm not complaining.  I want to enjoy this as much as I can.... and I hope you will too!

Rare 1973 Heathkit BUILD! Pt.2

Comments

Watching you put together a kit is much more relaxing than watching paint dry! When I was in college in the 60s, I put together several kits for fellow students who discovered that follow instructions and/or soldering was beyond them. I put together a Heathkit AR-15 receiver for the guy down the hall, and he sat on my bed and watch me do much of it! PS: I still use that same model Weller soldering iron that you're using, including the cast iron stand with the little well for the sponge and the spring with a phenolic ring on top to hold the iron.

Any one know where to find the paper work for an IB-1103 Frequency counter? I got one a year ago cheap, has problems.

Nice build series. ❀

Ooooh, I just remembered. My dad who was a licenced radio-ham, had the Heathkit 'Cantenna' Transmitter Dummy Load (went to look it up: HN-31). Basically it does look like a paint can (could be filled with oil for cooling over certain power ratings - never was when used by my Dad)

Great mod for the electrolytic caps! When I did my IT-12 recap I added a 4-lug terminal strip. My mod came out OK but I like yours better. Yours was much simpler to do. Thanks for the videos and have fun with the rest of the build!

I've had some time off for the holidays and this series has been a lot of fun to watch while I eat my breakfast. I have one of these (already built though) that I got from a friend. When I opened it up, there was a wasp nest inside. :| Fortunately nobody was home... I'll get it on the bench to restore eventually.

You have me hooked now Fran, I'm searching eBay for un-built kits, I miss the buzz of building from scratch, hope I find something, I will do as you suggest to replace the Capacitors which will have dried up. Thanks for sharing the buzz of the build :-)

Put my note in the YouTube comments...

I've got an IM-18 VTVM second hand.... it doesn't work of course... (even after re-capping) i'm thinking of tearing it down and doing a complete rebuild with new components. Not the same as a NOS kit, but maybe i'll get a little bit of the magic....
