2018-09-05 14:35:09 +0000 UTCThe dial reader is likely a quadrature encoder that uses 2 optical sensors at an offset, this would allow it to count ticks on the dial but also direction. Either one of the CD chips is a quadrature counter with A and B inputs instead of UP/DOWN (given the age, maybe not), or one CD chip is a quadrature decoder and the other is a standard up-down counter. Quadrature decoders and counters are somewhat special and now rare, single chip magnetic encodes have mostly taken over most use cases.
