You have to remember that the Naruto manga was written weekly meaning that the anime could only air as far as the manga was written so that had filler in between a lot of key arcs. Most of it is not as bad as people make it out to be. I think I skipped a total of three episodes across the entire series watching the whole thing for the first time last year. That being said flashbacks are excessive especially in Shippouden
