Project Vault Game Dev Log 01

So it's time that I start working on actually creating some unique posts for these! Been working a lot on the side or during down time at work to start building up and playing Unreal and Blender. For decades now I've dreamed about making games and this year I've finally decided to step into actually trying to do so! So it's time to introduce Project Vault. This is going to be the early codename for my first game I'm making :3!! I hope folks enjoy the little updates I bring about for it at the end of each month!

Bod Model

So in terms of dev time, the majority of my time this last month has gone to making the Bod model! I've currently got the first pass on the model done and rigged! In addition after a bit of work, Bod is also working so far in my unreal engine build! Still got a lot of work to do with it, my next goal is to get a working and rigged tail I can also add in for the model. Likewise I'm planning on getting a texture program next month to help with the model skin!

Game System

At the moment I'm just barely getting into this so far! I've gotten a working Currency system into the game, same with placeholder crouch and crawl transitions for Bod. In addition a placeholder pause and start menu have been created, although a lot of it needs to still get filled out haha! One of my major goals for June is going to be getting a save system in place, along with learning how to transition to different levels in game. If I have time left over, I'll be putting some of the remaining efforts into starting a shopkeep/upgrade system :3!!

Mechanics

So there aren't too many mechanics in play yet for the build, although I have gotten a health system working! In addition, one of the core aspects of the UI and gameplay has been introduced which is a magnetic field around Bod. Whenever Bod picks up salvage or sells it, the field as is can change size in game! Hoping to expand upon this mechanic more once a few other aspects of the game have been introduced. I've gone ahead and added some of my initial videos of this in action with the blog post :3!!

Comments

Yeee there will definetly be some mechanics involved regarding that! Still deciding how far I want to take them tho X3!

BodBloat

Oooh! Heh, based on the idea of the magnetic field changing size with how much loot Bod gathers or sells, would it be safe to assume that there may be a bit of an expansion mechanic involved? x)

Fair ^v^

I sent my ID on the creator messaging!

Local Protogen

AH thank you! Yeah having folks I can ask stuff about when it comes to unreal is super handy! Would be down for that :3!

BodBloat

This might be out of place, but I've been using unreal for about a year now - if you have any bugs I would be happy to help out with it! I'll direct message you my Discord if you want. :)

Local Protogen

It absolutely is! Yeah seeing stuff I wrote up or plotted out come together like this has been cool as heck :3!

BodBloat

Yee! It's going to be quite a challenge! Thankfully I really enjoy learning how to do this sort of stuff :3!!

BodBloat

No worries at all! Still very much something I need to hone down myself with time as I start to really build stuff out :3!!

BodBloat

Sounds pretty awesome! Retro effects can be hard to pull off right, and I wish you the best of luck with it.

Local Protogen

This is really cool to see all your intense design work lifting off the pages of a notebook and coming to life in the early stages of a game!

JG Bulloon

Thanks! Artstyle wise I'm not sure at the moment, but I really want to lean in to some of the vibes and feels of earlier PS1/PS2 games like Metal gear solid and Megaman legends in terms of vibes. Still got a world to lean when it comes to post processing and overall look in Unreal haha!

BodBloat

Yeaaah XD I've got the tail at least modeled, but not rigged yet. Need to learn a bit on how to rig it correctly so that it can export over to unreal at the moment, but I have some ideas :3!!! Really want to get that chonky boi in!

BodBloat

Apologies if my question seems odd. I'm making a game in unreal myself right now, so I was curious.

Local Protogen

Looks pretty cool so far. What artstyle are you planning on using for Unreal? Are you planning on using the basic stuff or leaning more into some post-processing volume shenanigans?

Local Protogen

Oh, tail
