After just watching the reaction part I wanted to share my interpretation of the events in the backstory: The mother worked three jobs to keep afloat: The janitor position in the mornings, the clerk position in the evenings and at night at a love hotel. Especially the third job was draining her for obvious reasons. She got tired and depressed, but her daughter kept her motivated. You can see a similar egg timer she uses at home with her daughter also been used to time her shift at night. Home's ringing, figuratively speaking. The second half of the flashback was all one day: The birthday of her daughter. She dreamt about gifting her the dress she saw in the shopping window. To pay for it, she takes out money from the envelope which was the money for the "organization" she works for in the love hotel. This is hinted by the amount she takes out: 30.000 Yen. The exact amount she gets from her clients for a night. Practically speaking, she stole money from them, and they found out, sending guys over to collect and discipline her. The took her daughter to make up for the lost profit of her stealing and being hurt. This detail of it being a love hotel makes it that much sadder for me. Not only is she working herself to the bone for herself and her daughter but literally gives body and soul away for her family, hence the depression and tiredness. The only thing keeping her head up was her daughter, appreciating what she is giving up for her (even though she doesn't know the whole story, obviously). That's why she was so hurt when Aira was so ungrateful and impudent when she finally could talk to her and made her lash out, killing Aira in the process accidentally.
