In the chaos of the ensuing battle, Luna catches sight of the Phantom making a run for the trees. With nothing but a brief glance over to Maya’s overwatch position, Luna tumbles out of cover and chases after the target, fully confident that her partner had things under control here.
“Damn it, Luna. I’m SO going to bust your ass once I catch up with you.” Maya curses again, and lays down another barrage of suppressive fire at the mercenaries, hoping to keep their attention on her.
But despite having the high ground and the element of surprise, these mercs weren’t amateurs. Within seconds they had managed to re-organize and mount an effective counterstrike using their superior numbers in their favor.
While providing cover fire for each other in perfectly coordinated rotation, they kept Maya suppressed behind a rock, as they advanced on two fronts, gradually neutralizing her positional advantage. Likewise, Maya knew every second she allowed them to close in increased the odds against her ... exponentially.
So without a second thought, she moved into the offensive.
Releasing a couple of smoke grenades down the slope she flooded the area with a dense haze that made visual contact impossible with anything beyond two feet. The perfect cover for her to make her move.
Then, she came onto them like a hammer, using her speed and raw force to neutralize the mercs one by one through close quarters combat. Limbs were broken. Joints were snapped. And before the unknown soldiers could react, they were face down in the dirt screaming in pain.
