I served in the First Gulf War. I didn’t have much of a taste for hunting animals after my service. Also, I can go see, say, a city’s fireworks display on the 4th of July or whatever. If I hear noises like fireworks or I’ve heard machines at construction sites that just set me off. If I know it’s coming, I’m fine but I HATE gunshot type sounds when I’m not expecting them.

The last time I was deployed in 2005 the insurance policy was $200K. It's good to see the governments value of military personnel has increased over the past 80 years lol

The pronunciation of "Corps" in the context of the Marine Corps is derived from French. In French, the final consonants in many words are not pronounced, and this has carried over into English for certain loanwords. I'm sure you have heard the Marines shouting CORPSMAN(which are combat medics) the P and S rule applies there as well. When I was going through my Hospital Corpsman training about a century ago I asked the same question about the P and S in CORPSMAN and all my instructor said was YOU CAN THANK THE FRENCH FOR THAT MOVING ON.

John never signed the papers for his GI life insurance policy. Due to this, his wife never received it. If soldiers were not married, it usually went to the parents. 10,000 dollars back in 1945 is roughly equivalent to around 167,000 dollars today.

It comes from the Latin word "Corpus". In French, it became Corps (also pronounced "Core") meaning "body" or which can designate a group or grouping. In the military context, it's been used since Napoleon I, who created the first "Corps d'Armée" (grouping together several inter-army divisions).

We have no clue. But it's true. Lol

Then why is there a P and a S?

Biss Reactions

When pronouncing United States Marine CORPS the P and S in CORPS are pronounced silently. EXAMPLE: United States Marine Core.

Great reaction Biss! It's a tough series to watch and you did a great job reacting to the series. Here is a link to the documentary where Eugene Sledge and a few others from the series reflect on the war in their later years. It's really cool to be able to watch them describe some of what we have just watched. - https://youtu.be/QFAO6sMZLq0?feature=shared My favorite is BoB for the simple fact that it is relatable. I have been to a few countries in Europe and can relate to the task the troops fighting in the European theatre against the Nazis and their allies. The pacific theatre was too remote and I have never experienced tropical jungles with the oppressive heat, so I can't relate to the troops experiences in the pacific. I suspect the air war in the next series is not going to be pretty. The aircrews had the crap beaten out of them relentlessly and thousands upon thousands of aircrew were killed in those ice cold flying coffins. The aircraft were not pressurized, so the temperatures in the plane were well below freezing when they cruised at around 25,000ft, while being super cramped and incredibly loud inside. Those guys had a very tough time in the war. Thanks again and we look forward to your future reactions.
