You mentioned, “They just want to have a shower, a good meal and get to bed.” There would be some, sure, but, after surviving near death experiences, seeing your friends die, many 18 and 19 year old young men would have had a different urge. Especially when he knows he has to go back up to the line, even a young man who acts like he’s 10 feet tall and bulletproof, when confronted with his own mortality, will feel a need to ‘leave a legacy’ behind, if you know what I’m saying. I don’t know if it’s the same thing but populations of women serving in the service in a combat theater tend to see a rise in pregnancy rates. Whether that is them feeling their mortality or just them wanting to get sent home when they wind up being with child, I just don’t know.

2024-03-25 04:04:45 +0000 UTCYou REALLY freaked out over Leckie maybe cutting on his feet. He had enormous blisters. He was just popping them. Biss, you asked about “…..semper???…..” It’s Latin for ‘Always’ or ‘Forever.’ The Marine motto is ‘Semper Fidelis,’ (often shortened to ‘Semper Fi’) The basic attitude the Marines want to build, their reputation is ‘No worse enemy, no more loyal friend,’ it’s, basically, “I’ll give you whichever you want!” The Marines fall under the Navy (though they’d object to the term ‘under’) and there’s a famous story of the common misunderstanding around the world of the American armed forces….. The story goes that a terrible hurricane smashed into some Caribbean island or other and the, sort of, big interested parties gathered to talk about it; USA, England & France, among others. During the American time to say what they were prepared to do, an American Admiral said, “I’ve got a Carrier Battle Group with a Marine regiment attached that can be in the port of the capital city in a matter of hours.” The story goes that some French diplomat sniffed at the offer, saying, “These people have just been through a hurricane….. what do you propose, bombing them to relieve them?” Bristling but with exaggerated patience he explained what a carrier battle group could do….. “Messe Secretary, the carrier is nuclear powered and can, when hooked up to city from a port can power a small city without losing any ship function. Aboard the carrier are a squadron of helicopters that can pull people out of remote areas and transport them to hospitals. The carrier has a 350 bed hospital and every modern imaging technology and laboratory facilities that’s fully staffed with combat surgeons and skilled support staff. Within 3 hours the task force will be close enough to take over radar air control to replace the tower facility you lost at the airport. We have airborne early warning radars to direct the flow of supplies in to the air strip. The ship’s hospital has supplies of frozen blood and plasma but, if we run short, we have 1000s of able seamen of every blood type prepared to roll up their sleeves and donate. Our kitchens and cooks can prepare 3 hot meals per day to 7000 hungry sailors and airmen on a normal day. Wait until you see what they can crank out on a short term emergency basis until supplies can be brought in. The Marine Regiment is prepared to begin deploying to more remote areas and, believe me, sir, our Marines can get into places you couldn’t imagine, looking for survivors. We’ll be sending them in by boat and aircraft. They can even parachute into really remote areas, if necessary. Deployed with them will be Navy Combat Engineers that are as skilled at clearing blocked roads, moving fallen trees and restoring services like water and electricity. They come supplied with armored bulldozers, explosives and all the equipment required of a major construction effort. I understand the internet infrastructure on the island is down? Our ships have the bandwidth to support its own operations and the island’s internet and cell phone needs.” The version I heard had the Admiral getting quite testy to be challenged thusly by a Frenchman, said, “American forces have shed their blood liberating your country twice in the recent past and have never asked for a spade-full of dirt more than required to bury our own dead.

2023-11-20 23:50:53 +0000 UTCI have lived in the United States for all but 2 years of my life (Where I lived in Thailand) and I have lived in 12 States and 2 US territories. I do not remember ever encountering a fellow American that considered Yankee an insult. And I have had numerous encounters where it was used by foreign nationals as a term of endearment. And, of course, in New York, it is a badge of honor for Yankee fans...and if you're a Red Sox fan, sorry, you're still a Yank.

2023-11-05 21:29:40 +0000 UTCAlso while it isn't really your thing and it will definitely make you cry you should watch the drone footage of Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman. He was the first MOH recipient to have his acts caught on camera and its a powerful and insane video to watch. There's a good video of it where a guy narrates what is going on and its crazy

2023-11-05 19:52:40 +0000 UTCYankee or cracker or whatever insult you can think of for americans or white dudes doesn't really mean anything to me, if someone says it in a joking way or just don't mean anything bad by it then its cool, if they're saying it in a asshole or sarcastic way then they're just an asshole unless its a justified context meaning the person they're directing it at is deserving of an insult. You can pretty much be as "racist" as you want toward me and I couldn't care less but if I say one wrong word in any context directed at anyone of a different race its like I punted a small child into a woodchipper but it is what it is

2023-11-05 19:49:13 +0000 UTCAn MP is Military Police, specifically the US Military Police in this case, the US military has their own police and court/justice system comprised of US military members with that specific job

2023-11-05 19:40:57 +0000 UTCThose MPs are American soldiers and they are checking the soldiers for a pass because all soldiers need to have permission to be off base and drinking or doing anything else really.

2023-11-05 19:33:29 +0000 UTCYankee, a native or citizen of the United States or, more narrowly, of the New England states of the United States (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut). The term Yankee is often associated with such characteristics as shrewdness, thrift, ingenuity, and conservatism. It was applied to Federal soldiers and other Northerners by Southerners during the American Civil War (1861–65) and afterward. The origin of the term is unknown. The Oxford English Dictionary says that “perhaps the most plausible conjecture” is that it comes from the Dutch Janke, the diminutive of Jan (John). British soldiers are recorded using it as a term of derision in 1775. Mitford Mathews traced its rise, pointing out that no evidence of use of the word by New Englanders before the Battle of Lexington (1775) has been found. The term was originally meant as an insult but not anymore. The term Yankee isn't from baseball because the term predates that sort by more than 100 years.

2023-11-05 19:27:33 +0000 UTCTHUNDER! Great reaction Biss, looking forward to more. :) MP is " Military police " they are in charge of taking care of military that can't behave. The medel of honor reward is a true soldiers perk to get, really amazing. And i believe the Yanks or Yankees are refered to their baseball teams, much like americans make fun of the crickets. It is not considered a bad thing to call an American, more of a friendly tease.
