The Pacific episode 2

Comments

In Europe there was still respect between enemy soldiers besides Germany vs Soviets. But in the Pacific after seeing what the Japanese did to prisoners and civilians, there was no respect. Just hatred. Very nasty stuff. The Chinese and other Asian people were treated even worse than the allies were. China got it just as bad as the Soviets or Germany. Japan killed 17-20 million but only lost 3 million and then got a very light punishment because Communism was the new enemy once the war ended.

The Japanese soldiers were rushing the machine guns because it was a tactic called a Banzai charge. The idea was to send waves of soldiers at the enemy to overwhelm them, but more often than not, it just got a lot of them killed. The movie, Letters from Iwo Jima, would be a good reaction after you finish this series. It's from the perspective of Japanese soldiers during this war.

Medals are meant to be a reward for brave acts on battle. However they can be a curse for those that survived for they are a constant reminder that you survived while so many did not. Survivors guilt is a powerful thing one can drown in it's sorrow or barely tread it's dangerous waters ones entire life until the day they die.

During World War I and World War II, standard helmets were made from thin steel. They provided protection mainly against shrapnel rather than shock waves. They were lighter and provided better protection than helmets from previous eras.

During Guadalcanal the Japanese would bomb the Marines positions with bombers planes and artillery at night every hour but not a lot but just enough to keep the Marines up all night long.

10:00 the military branches don't hate each other, they're just generally very competitive people even before joining the military and that competitiveness is then instilled in them and encouraged even more once they join. In those specific situations its partly because historically the Marines have had poor funding and a lack of supplies and equipment more so than other branches. Even in the modern day a lot of military units even including special operations which have ridiculous amounts of funding will at times steal or trade with/from other units/branches when one side doesn't need the equipment as bad but they don't steal life saving or like important stuff. For instance I read about some SEALs stealing a truck from an Army unit overseas because the SEALs needed it for some mission or something and the army was just using it to move shit around the base and wouldn't give it to them so they just stole it one night. There's also more famously Andy Stumpf who was a Navy SEAL and after raiding a target and finding a stash of rockets decided to trade a army guy a ballistic helmet for a launcher that fired those rockets and then proceeded to use it against the taliban. There's a youtube video of him using that rocket launcher against a truck full of taliban fighters, he was also on Joe Rogan a few times talking about it

Just an FYI the young man who had the heart murmur also played the young redheaded kid from JURASSIC PARK

Stakes designate the limits of their sector of fire. They are placed in the ground to prevent friendly fire and to also ensure defensive field of fire.

They used passwords with the letter L because japanese alphabet doesn't have the letter L in it and had very difficult time pronouncing that letter.
