Biss did you recognize older brother (Edward Norton) as Jack from Fight Club? (or the younger brother as Sarah Connor's son from Terminator 2?)

2023-09-03 11:58:00 +0000 UTCAll the schools in my district had to watch this movie in high school. I graduated in '08 so I'm not sure if they still do, but it made for some good discussions that you wouldn't normally have. Even if you don't watch it at school anymore, most Americans have seen it. Such a great movie.

2023-08-23 21:21:10 +0000 UTCI absolutely agree that there should be an open discussion about the subject matter of this film. My point was that I don't know if (based on how toxic YT comments can get) Biss would like to have that in her channels comment section. It's a very sensitive topic of discussion, regardless of disabling or not disabling comments. Ultimately it is up to Biss and how she wants to handle her channel.

2023-08-23 14:54:44 +0000 UTCYou don't necessarily have the right to shoot someone just because they're on your property, the laws based around that kind of thing vary a lot by state but in general whether its your property or "public property" which is kind of a misused term but refers to like a mall parking lot or any public spaces whether they're privately owned or not as long as you are allowed to be there, you usually only have the right to shoot/kill someone if you "believe your life or someone else life is in danger" so basically he would've been justified in killing the first guy because that guy had a gun and turned towards him while also committing a crime but depending on the state the second one was not justified so it would've been murder. Also in some states you even "have a duty to retreat" meaning that if you feel your life is threatened you're supposed to try to get away first and only if you can't get away are you then allowed to defend yourself which is just plain stupid in my opinion but the other side of the coin is that the "if you feel threatened you can use lethal force" thing is vague and could be misused

2023-08-23 14:28:46 +0000 UTCI disagree with the suggestion that you disable the comments, you mentioned you want to hear what Americans think about the movie and you won't get much feedback if you prevent people from speaking at all. In America we used to have movies and shows that were referred to as "After School Specials." They would play in the afternoons on the Public Broadcasting Service, usually made for children, with simple stories about moral lessons and how to be a good citizen and so on, like a young person is tempted by a friend to steal from a store and gets caught and learns why it's wrong, or a young person is tempted by a friend to smoke a cigarette, or drink alcohol, bears the consequences, reconciles with their family, lives happily ever after. "American History X," is similar in nature to these kinds of productions, albeit better produced and adult oriented. I think Europeans get a one-sided representation of America because of films like this. If all I knew of Germany was the NSDAP and the Third Reich, I'd probably have a biased view of Germans. If all I knew of Romania was Ceausescu, I might think a certain way about Romanians. Likewise, if all I know about immigrants is the stories of assault in Sweden, stabbings in Germany, Lola in France and the myriad of videos circulating on websites like bitchute.com, it's going to affect my perception of immigration in general. The trouble is that nobody really wants to have these conversations, even in the age of "social media," when we're theoretically all engaging and interacting with each other. This movie provides potential talking points, then has the characters shout themselves down or resort to violence so that what's relevant gets conflated with domestic abuse, barbarism and irrational hatred and is therefore meritless as it's identified as the ideals of a cruel sadist, but I've listened to Europeans today sympathize with the views of Derek from 25 years ago. It pays to keep in mind that this movie was made in 1998. That indicates that the rhetoric and culture was significantly older. In other words, people in America had been expressing those views for a long time, and continued to feel that their pleas were falling on deaf ears, or antagonistic, spiteful ears, which only exacerbated their resentment and hostility until they radicalized into the kinds of personalities portrayed by the characters in this film. Some Americans will tell you this film is outright propaganda, designed to instill fear, anger and resentment towards whites in general, and they feel they have to contend with and overcome decades of portrayals like the one seen here in order to legitimize advocacy for fairly practical political policies, such as maintaining a secure border. They'll point out Tony Kaye is Jewish as being another example of the hegemonic control over culture that this particular group has. I think you should keep the channels of dialogue open. If some people can't help themselves and insist on being offensive, it's the nature of the beast, they'll be ignored.

2023-08-23 14:15:06 +0000 UTCThis is definitely a film that you have to spend some time digesting. I think you'll agree, just from the look on your face the whole time, this is just a frustrating movie to watch. Great storytelling but frustrating. The filmaking and acting were great too I thought. I do agree with Rob, if you do end up putting it on Youtube, be prepared for the trolls in the comments. The funny thing is Ethan Suplee (Seth) is a super humble, nice guy. Met him a couple years ago. He has also lost a shed load of weight and is jacked now. You should look him up, it's rather inspiring. Thanks for the reaction and all your content!

2023-08-23 03:23:51 +0000 UTCIf this does make it to YouTube, you may want to disable the comment section. I mean if people can't be civil and respectful to one another when discussing a song or movie in the comments, (given the very sensitive subject matter of this movie) I highly doubt people will change for this one.

2023-08-23 00:03:21 +0000 UTCi agree with you about hiring the best candidate, but here in the USA you're considered a bigot and the woke mob will try to cancel you. Ed Nortons character was speaking the truth, but his methods only work if you are a member of the radical left

2023-08-22 23:19:08 +0000 UTCPowerful movie that brings out many emotions and feelings. Lot of tough scenes to watch. A movie definitely worth many discussions. This movie is 25 years old and not much has changed society wise, if anything it's gotten worse. The movie is still very relevant today.

2023-08-22 20:43:51 +0000 UTCGreat reaction Biss, as always. I had the very same feeling! This movie is very difficult to react to and give a opinion regarding. It shows really well just like you said, a circle of hate. Hatred leads to more hate and Cameron used this hate to feed more hatred to gain power. It is an amazing journey to see someone so deep in hatred to turn around to try to make an improvement. It is a very sad movie as well as beautiful. I totally agree with you on the job part, knowlage is the only key that is required to get that job you apply for and for people to not repeat a bad history.. It is a difficult subject as people gets easy to be offended these days. History is what binds everyone together.
