Heyo, I thought this might be fun to share
Sketch- In this first phase the sketch reflects what the client and I initially spoke about upon starting the commission process. We take time and make sure to talk through all of the aspects and details in writing and I do my best to put it into a rough sketch. This phase is the best time to make sweeping changes so I like to spend some time in this stage until the commissioner feels pleased with it.
Color Study - In this phase we start to explore color, mood, and lighting. I’ll make quick passes of color underneath the sketch line art to get a general sense of how the final will look. More often than not the color study will be a very solid representation of what the final render will look like. Once we get that nailed down then I start in on the Final.
Final - Having the entirety of the decision making done, I jump into rendering out the final piece. Recently I’ve started just direct painting over the color study and it feels much better than what I used to do, which was redraw the line art with super fine detail, redo all the color layers, and then start rendering. I like how much more organic and painterly the direct method is, as well as the fact that it saves me days of work for something that isn’t of higher quality.
Hope you enjoyed the little sneak peak into the process of things
