Bets on losing dogs (mini comic #360)

This is directly based off the song “bet on losing dogs” by Mitski, I always thought the song kinda really fit Elizabeth/Circus baby especially the lines I drew out in the comic itself. Something about it is so nail on the head about what exactly her story is about.

I’ve made a handful of comics about Elizabeth before, some also similarly angsty, though not on totally on her own and totally about her story seeing I’d compare her to Vanessa or Abby etc

Elizabeth’s story is very sad to me, I think you could view her deal as just a tragic accident, that she was William’s favourite before etc etc but that’s not exactly how I see it, just due to everything we know about Elizabeth (including her depiction in books, and even through Abby)

Elizabeth at her core, is a character who is abandoned, who wants to be loved. Across her depictions she just wants her father’s approval, him to even acknowledge her at all. She never gets that, she’s never perfect enough for him. I know people take issue with her being described as “snobby” or “spoiled” etc but I always thought that made sense. Everytime we see her she’s competing to have her father’s full attention and it’s because he ignores his kids. He doesn’t watch them, that’s for sure. So Elizabeth acts out, just like Abby does in the movie, she’s a fussy kid.

It’s sad to me the one thing that proved her father cared at all, circus baby, she wasn’t even allowed to see. Her need to see this one gift from her father is what ultimately gets her killed. It’s sad to me that William was probably more proud about circus baby than his own daughter. “Tell your baby that, IM your baby”

SO SORRY FOR THIS ANGSTY COMIC PFF I always have a lot of thoughts on these characters so it’s fun to explore them through art. So sorry to Elisabeth Afton, you deserve far better than whatever you got, let’s hope Abby has a happy ending so maybe one version of you is happy. Super fun to draw out especially the second panel was interesting to do, anyway I hope you enjoy this comic even if it’s a lil sad! 🩵💜
