Gallery Nucleus Portland P.S. 10 Exhibition

The postcards that I illustrated are going to be on display (and available for purchase) from November 8th-26th at Nucleus Portland! There will be all sorts of work from various artists available, so if you're in the area, definitely check it out!! The opening reception will be held on the 8th from 4-6pm.

Later this month I'll have both new and old designs available in the store!

What I've been up to!

Still just chipping away at The Netherlings, for the most part, and working on overwintering my plants now that it's getting chillier! A lot of critters around the house have been trying to keep warm lately...

Including this juvenile gray rat snake that was sunning on the rocks!

"Netherlings" Color Explorations

Since I recently turned inks in, I've been working on figuring out how I want to approach colors in this book - which is always harder than I expect!! So here's a look into how that process has been going.

This is some of my oldest color concept work: at this time I was thinking it'd be cool to make it super limited with areas of stark black to push that eerie otherworldly feeling, but I felt like it'd become monotonous really quickly.

I also have old concept work that takes it in a slightly different direction. Instead of being totally monotonous, it uses warm but saturated colors, plus a sort of sickly green to make it feel a bit "off."

You can see traces of both of these in the promo picture I drew for the official announcement a while back! I'm still fond of this direction, actually, so I'm still kind of considering it...

But to be honest, it's hard to juggle really cohesive limited palettes in a comic AND keep things interesting! So what I'm testing out right now is a palette that isn't so strict, but instead relies on "unnatural" colors to make things feel different from what we know. This gives me a lot more leeway with changing scenes and groups of characters and lets me create more points of interest. But I'm still not 100% sure that it's the right choice... hopefully I can decide soon, because I need to get to work lol!!

As a bonus, here's a page where I decided to have a little fun. I like "dramatic" moments because you get to focus more on how something feels as opposed to how it should look.

Nucleus Portland Postcards

Recently I was invited to make postcard-sized art for Gallery Nucleus Portland's 10th P.S. exhibition, so I made these two pieces! They're both made using Dr. Ph. Martin's bombay india ink and Prismacolor Verithin colored pencils.

It's been years since I've been able to sit down and illustrate anything traditionally, so I'm definitely feeling rusty! But it was a lot of fun and I'd love to try to find the time to do it more often if I can.

The P.S. 10 show will be held November 8-26 at Nucleus Portland, and these (along with many others) will be available for purchase for $100 apiece! I wish I could attend myself, but if you're in the area, you should definitely check it out!

What I've been up to!

Still just chipping away at The Netherlings, for the most part! (I'm doing a lot of flatting to prepare for the color phase!) I don't have much news for this month - I think I should have more to share next month.

In the meantime, some personal notes: I went to a plant swap at our local library a little while ago, and while I wasn't expecting much since I didn't bring anything to swap, I walked away with a ton of cuttings + some pots that people were getting rid of!??

While there I was handed a flyer for a talk on native seed gathering, and from there I learned of a few other events coming up, including native plant sales, workshops, and a seed swap. All this to say: libraries are really cool, and the events held there are a great way to learn more about other community activities + meet people with similar interests!

A few of these were brainstorming for the upcoming Gallery Nucleus postcard exhibition - I'm excited to show off the finish pieces later!!

A lot of this is pretty self explanatory, but some quick notes: the bat girl belongs to yumyum_cult, and the Hazbin sketch was for a friend who was debuting a doujinshi a while back. I'm not super familiar with Hazbin, and man, the characters are hard to draw lol...

What I've been up to!

I'm getting back into the swing of things after a short unplanned break - I somehow slept on my shoulder so poorly that I could barely move it for days??!!? It's basically back to normal now, but it's scared me into looking into the fitness classes offered at our city rec center LOL... Do your stretches and strengthening exercises, everyone...

In art-related news, I've been working on a new skirt design: orange blossom! I've been wanting to do an orange-themed design for YEARS, but I couldn't get it to flow how I wanted until now. I'm really excited to see the final result!

Beyond that, I turned in inks for The Netherlings last month!! Once those are approved, I'll be moving on to colors, and then all that's left is backmatter and the cover. It's really crazy to imagine that it'll be finished before long... Even though it was written for a young audience, I hope you'll look forward to it!

Anyway, thank you as always for sticking around for another month, and I hope September is good to you!

Honeysuckle

One more summer-themed illustration! I've been wanting to draw honeysuckles for a long time, but it took me a while to build up the confidence - they're really deceptively difficult to draw!?

They're a really nostalgic flower for me, though, and I hope this makes you feel similarly!

"The Netherlings" Character Art

Since the book is coming along, I want to start sharing more!! So here are some drawings of the main trio that I did for fun. Their names are Ethan, Imp, and Chloe - early on we thought it'd be funny to give Ethan a normal human name, and it just sort of stuck.

I still haven't totally nailed down their colors yet, but I feel like I'm close! I'll be starting colors soon, so I need to decide already!!

Anyway, even though the book's release is still a ways off, I hope you'll look forward to seeing them a bit more in the future!

What I've been up to!

Not a whole lot! But I was invited to participate in a gallery show, so I'll hopefully have some more details on that soon! In the meantime, I really ought to figure out what I'll be drawing for it...

Aside from that, I finally found my envelopes of seeds I've been gathering from various native species during walks/etc over the past few years, so right now I have purple passion flowers sprouting! Maybe not the ideal season to be doing this, but I didn't want to let the seeds get any older. I also got a roll of film back from my half-frame camera, so here's a (film) photo of me from a solstice party a while ago alongside a (phone) photo of those passion flowers.

What I've been up to!

I FINALLY finished moving! Sorry I've been a bit quiet in the meantime - it's been a very long, exhausting process. All that's left is to finish cleaning up the previous place and unpacking the new place! It feels a bit like a fresh start, which is really exciting!

Aside from that, work on the graphic novel is going well! I've finished drawing everything (sans any revisions that pop up), so next is word bubbles. Either this month or next I'll post some new previews to the Harvest tier, so I hope you'll look forward to it!

I had so much fun planning and drawing last month's illustration that I wanted to try something similar this month, too, so this one is pollinator-themed! I did a similar faux-riso method, which is really challenging to figure out, but I think it gives such a fun effect...!
