POD 134: Lessons from Joel Stanley on Charlotte's Web

In this episode I sit down with Cannabis researcher, grower, and entrepreneur Joel Stanley to learn about the massive shift in public perception of Cannabis that occurred after the therapeutic effect of CBD on pediatric epilepsy was recognized. We also discuss legal and regulatory changes in Cannabis, the entourage effect, development of botanical medicines, the supplement industry, and his new psychedelic venture Ajna bioscience.

CBD can be nice. You just need wayyy beyond the dose that you can generally buy. Like 1000mg

Really enjoyed listening to this. I did research on cannabis at University in Netherlands around 2006-2012ish when all this was just starting. I remember thinking when people find out about CBD its going to be big. I definately share the sentiment that it was hyped and over marketed for everything under the sun though. Also found discussion around entourage effect interest. My background is in natural products chemistry and I think there is a lot of misconceptions around this topic. First people will interchangably use terms synergy and entourage effect. The entourage effect was originally coined by Ralphael Mechauloum when discussing some of the effects of endocannabinoids. Ethan Russo took it a step further and used it to describe potential interactions of compounds in cannabis plant. While certainly worth studying the hype around this topic often outpaced the science. There isnt a lot of good evidence for entourage effect. There is some in vitro studies but no good clinical ones still as far as I know. Anyway I could go on but thanks for doing this.

Glad to hear that, D

I would have thought Hamilton’s stance is that synthetic is better. Think this is the most credibility I’ve heard given to botanicals. CW was a really touching story, but it kinda makes me have less hope about the future of 7ohm, or even for the idea that opioids aren’t inherently bad. Another great episode that warrants multiple listens to grasp everything said. Edit to say, not “better “ but just generally more preferable as the outcome of taking a single molecule is more standardized and predictable than any botanical. But if these botanicals are truly that standardized then maybe there is something to be said for them.

Wow! The timing on this one coming out as the Senate just snuck the closing of the hemp “loophole” of the Farm Bill into the CR to reopen the government.

Great piece Hamilton, TY! Yeah I hear you / agree re your observations re children, veterans etc. This is how we are making incremental progress in Texas(!) with ibogaine / HB3717. Will see how that progresses.

The Clayton and Obama link just goes to the mitt Romney video

Tell Joel to connect with the team at Nootropics Depot. Paul (owner of the company) has been doing an incredible job over the years looking into natural products, working with manufacturers, and I believe he's looking at creating reference standards for some plant materials. They're a bit more in depth than I'm able to explain but are really breaking new ground.

The Stanley brothers definitely know how to tank a company. Hearing another Stanley brother talk about chemistry during a meeting was one of the more painful experiences ever.

The title just got switched for a second, corrected now. The video will be done uploading in about an hour

In Episode 126 Josh Hartsel talks about how CBD prices have plummeted. It’s basically free here in California now.

I haven’t listened yet but my family’s oldest ‘family friends’ patriarch is one of the world’s top epilepsy specialists and he always says that cbd can be useful for epilepsy but only at doses so high it’s the most insanely expensive option. Does cbd have to be expensive or is it a regulatory thing, does anyone know?
